Prophet Elias at an altitude of 700 meters took its name from the Monastery of Prophet Elias, when the Italians occupied the Dodecanese on May 5th 1912 and began rebuilding the island.

24 km from Kritinia. In the village of Salakos there is a wonderful path in the pine trees and cypresses to reach Profitis Ilias. The Mount of Prophet Elias is at an altitude of 700 meters and was named after the Monastery of Prophet Elias. When the Italians captured the Dodecanese on 5 May 1912, they began the reconstruction of the island. So in the 1930s they created the village of Campo Ciaro in Eleousa and the two enchanting hotels "Elafos" in 1929 and "Elafina" in 1932 or "Cervo e Cerna" in Italian with a Tyrol western chalet architecture. These hotels improved in 1950. The area of Prophitis Ilias was full of forests where thousands of deer lived.

Another cool, forrested area, where you can drink a superb tea or have a lovely meal (Elafos hotel), like a colonial. Amazing views to the West coast of the island, a haunting Italian General's House.

The island of Rhodes is located on the southeast side of the Aegean Sea, approximately 10 kilometres from the coasts of Asia Minor. Being one of the most beautiful Greek islands, diamond-shaped Rhodes is the biggest and the most populated island of the Dodecanese, approximately 80 kilometres long and 40 kilometres wide and with 120.000 inhabitants. The mountain of Profitis Ilias rises about 700 meters high, in an environment where the rocky island’s interior blends in harmony with the chaotic forests of pines and Cypresses that deluge the area and preserve the rare and unique species of Dama Dama deer.

The wooded mountain of Profitis Ilias rises to a height of 798 m and there are magnificent views from the top. The area is also offered for nice scenic walks. Profitis Ilias. Profitis Ilias is a 641 meter (2,100 foot) high mountain southwest of Rhodes town, not far from Kamiros. It is a lovely wooded mountain with some very interesting attractions. Coming from Kolymbia and Epta Piges (Seven Springs) towards the village of Eleousa, you’ll first see the beautiful monastery of Aghios Nektarios. There is plenty of drinkable water throughout the area. Before the church stands an ancient, huge, famous plane tree that is hollow on the inside, just like a room. In the village of Eleousa you will be surprised by a large, mysterious derelict building. In the period around the World War II, when Rhodes was still in Italian hands, the Italians built a hospital here. Later, when the Italians left, it was a sanatorium for the chronically ill. However, since the seventies the sanatorium has been closed and when you drive along Eleousa today, at the main square, opposite the main church of Agia Eleousa, you will see this giant ghost building. Today Profitis Ilias is a forested enclave with a mix of mainly Calabrian pines, cedars and oaks. In the 1930's, the Italian occupiers of the island set about transforming the forsted ridge of the mountain into a semi-world park, attracted perhaps by the sub-Alpine nature of the terrain. The runis and remains of this era are a telling comment on the fate of fascist ambition. The road that cliimbs the mountain's wooded slopes from Salakos in the west is a serpentine delight. If you approach from Eleousa in the east, you pass the charming little Byzantine church of Agios Nikolaos fountoukli in its peaceful roadside setting. the church contains some fine, if faded, medieval frescoes. Both approaches lead eventually to a junction, high amidst the pines, but below the true summit. here stands the Italian era, chalet0style hotel Elafos and its annexe, Elafina which are currently being reinnovated to 5 Start Hotels. Alongside is the church of Profitis ilias. When you drive on towards Profitis Ilias, you will encounter two very interesting sights; the large round fountain and the church of Aghios Ioannis (St. John) Foundoukli constructed in the 15th century. A few kilometers away is the summit of Mount Profitis Ilias. Here you will be surprised by the Austrian-like scenes. There are two large buildings that are more reminiscent of Austria and Switzerland than Greece. One building is called Elafos, this is actually a hotel built in the year 1929, the other is named Elafina (1932). When last we were there (summer 2015), Elafina had been restored. Captive deer (elafia) inhabit the area. On the square near this building there is plenty of parking and there is also a nice taverna named Elafaki. One hundred meters from the taverna Elafaki, there is a stone staircase-which takes you up to the highest point of the mountain. Here too you will encounter a mysterious derelict and dilapidated building and a Catholic church. This building was the Cottage of the Italian dictator Mussolini used in the period around World War II. You can walk into the building and the church, but be careful because both buildings are in very poor condition.
