DIVE THE BLUE HOLE - off Ambergris Caye. Rated one of the best dives in the world by Jacques Cousteau. The Blue Hole is located in the center of Lighthouse Reef Atoll (a circular coral reef), approximately 1,000-feet in diameter, dropping over 400-feet into an incredible cavern. It is filled with giant stalactites and awe inspiring natural formations. Your first dive will take you to the Blue Hole itself, your second dive will be at Half Moon Caye, and your third dive will be at “The Aquarium” (all located within the Lighthouse Reef Atoll). If you are an experienced diver, wishing to scratch something off your “bucket-list”, then this is the tour for you. The Great Blue Hole is one of the most popular dive sites in Belize. You leave the dock at approximately 6:00-6:30 a.m., the boat ride will take about 2-1/2 to 3 hours, to arrive at your destination. Depending on weather conditions, you will begin the dive either on the north or south side. Staying reasonably close to the wall, will assist with orientation. The site can look imposing to even the most experience divers, so listen carefully to the safety briefing and stick close to your guide. Diving the South Side - If you dive the south side, you will approach the shallowest cave systems at about 100ft. You will notice that the angle of the wall changes, resulting in an overhang burdened with stalactites some of which are more than 3 feet in diameter and up to 20 feet in length. Fallen stalactites litter the lower ledge of the cave some 50ft below where stalagmites grow upwards (like a set of rotten teeth), as if to complete a grotesque subterranean shark's mouth. Below this is an entrance to a cavern system which adds an eerie feel to this already atmospheric dive. Diving the North Side - The north side is similar to the south with stalactite formations at 100-140ft deep but (unlike the south side), there is no lower ledge of stalagmites here, just the upper 'jaw' of stalactites hanging over the sunken karst abyss. The bottom is another 260+ft below and very little exploration has been done down there. Apparently it's just a large mound of sand and other fallen debris that has accumulated over the years.

Great place for day tours on the mainland: cave tubing, ruins, jungle canopy tours.
