Christ Church Cathedral sits in grand style, a pinnacle of beauty, near the banks of the Saint John River, presiding over the city of Fredericton. Built under the authority of Bishop John Medley between 1845 and 1853, it is now a National Historic Site. Tour the grounds and the cathedral and stand in awe of the stained glass and Gothic Revival architectural elements of the building. *Stop in to the Cathedral at noon on Fridays during the summer to enjoy the Summer Recital Series (Freewill Offering) *Free guided tours of Christ Church Cathedral are available during July and August, Monday to Friday, 9am-6pm; Saturday 10am-6pm. During the remainder of the year visitors are welcome to visit the Cathedral on their own from Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm. *The cornerstone was laid on October 15, 1845 and final construction was completed in 1853. *Original plans called for a twin tower design, but soaring construction costs led to the choice of a single tower. *On July 3, 1911, lightning struck the Cathedral and the resulting fire gutted the spire and resulted in the bells melting and falling to the earth. *Christ Church Cathedral is the home of “Little Ben,” a working model for “Big Ben” in London, England.
