An endless sea of food stalls make up one wing of this Sunday-morning market. You can just grab something—Thai pancakes, crepes, roasted chicken, fresh bagels and lox, a pupusa—and eat while you wander. There’s usually a musician, and maybe someone doing balloon animals or face-painting. The kids feel like they’re at a birthday party. We used to go at lunchtime, but now we like to go early, at 8 a.m., for breakfast. Because at that hour the people shopping are mostly chefs picking up produce for that night’s service, and it’s not that crowded yet.

Open Sundays, 8am-1pm, Rain Or Shine! the Market hosts 160 farmers, producers and food artisans who specialize in every crop that’s grown seasonally around the state and a large variety of culinary perspectives and practices from around the globe. Everyone from local families who live in the neighborhood to some of Southern California’s most respected chefs use the Market as their weekly food source and walk-in pantry. The Hollywood Farmers’ Market is also a community meeting place with a wide-range of activities and offerings that include live music, activities for children, a rich and varied offering of artisans selling their handmade arts and crafts and book-signings by some of the most celebrated authors in the food world.
