Just about an hour out of Charleston you will find Buffalo Creek Rail Rides. This is a great place to bring the entire family and explore a little piece of West Virginia. The highlight of the area is an old railroad track that runs along Buffalo Creek. You can head up the tracks on foot, bicycle, pedal car (that rides on the tracks) or in a rail car pulled by a an engine. Foot and bicycle access is free. There are fees to ride the rails. If you are in a pedal car and get tired they will hook you up to the engine and pull you the rest of the way. This is a railroad grade so it is never over a 2% grade. It is about 3 miles each way. Along the way you will see an old railroad wreck, a nice swim hole (brig a swim suit) and a beautiful waterfall. If you want to ride the rails make sure to make a reservation as they only head out a few times per day. We don't recommend doing this on a hot/humid day, the forest along the way can get extremely stuffy and steamy. Book this in the spring or fall if possible. If you have to book this in the summer try to go early in the day or as late as possible.

Great place to ride a train with family and hear about the history from the local conductor. Or is fitness is more fo you they rent rail bikes to pedal yourself.
