Local walks and swimming spots
There are numerous walks in this beautiful part of the world, the Begwyns just a mile or two from the cottage and others in nearby beauty spots.
The Begwyns is a 20 min walk from us. 2 kilometre walk. A 90 minute walk from us to the roundabout, a trig point and back. And the views are outstanding in the day of the Black mountains and the Beacons and uninterrupted night sky.

This is a lovely walk, rain or shine with a very dramatic moment at the end where it is possible to walk behind the final waterfall. Go to the car park at Cwm Parth Car Park, Waterfalls Centre, Cwm Parth, Ystradfellte, Aberdare CF44 9JF - its about 5 - 6 km / 2 - 3 hour walk.

Four Waterfalls Walk
Four Waterfalls WalkThis is a lovely walk, rain or shine with a very dramatic moment at the end where it is possible to walk behind the final waterfall. Go to the car park at Cwm Parth Car Park, Waterfalls Centre, Cwm Parth, Ystradfellte, Aberdare CF44 9JF - its about 5 - 6 km / 2 - 3 hour walk.

This is a wonderful place to swim in the Wye, not easy to find but an easy walk from the centre of Hay and and a well-kept local secret.
But beware - the track to the parking place is VERY rutted and VERY pot-holed – fine for Landrovers etc but not good for low-slung sports cars. Many people park on the road and walk down – it takes about 5 – 10 mins to do so. The little car park at the end of the track can only accommodate a dozen or so cars and on a hot day it can get full. Also do treat the river with respect, particularly with youngsters, as once out of the shallows, the current can be tremendously and deceptively strong.

A great circular foot path walk from Hay on Wye car park which climbs through Mouse Castle Wood then heads through gently undulating countryside to Priory Farm and returns to Hay on the Wye Valley Walk. Hidden in the woods is the remains of Mouse Castle an unfinished motte-and-bailey earthwork, consisting of a rock boss with an artificially scarped vertical side.[6] The castle was held by the de Clanowe family in the 14th century.

If you’re feeling energetic and the weather is kind you can walk up Pen Y Fan which is about 30 min drive from us. Favourite place to swim last summer in the lake below.
