Walk from the centre of Hay, along the made-up path alongside the River Wye and admire the wonderful wooden wildlife sculptures that mark the route. The pathway (on two levels) leads to a gate and into a meadow at The Warren where your dog can take a dip if he or she is so inclined.

Walk along the river or enjoy a picnic whilst watching the canoes go by.

This is a wonderful place to swim in the Wye, not easy to find but an easy walk from the centre of Hay and and a well-kept local secret. But beware - the track to the parking place is VERY rutted and VERY pot-holed – fine for Landrovers etc but not good for low-slung sports cars. Many people park on the road and walk down – it takes about 5 – 10 mins to do so. The little car park at the end of the track can only accommodate a dozen or so cars and on a hot day it can get full. Also do treat the river with respect, particularly with youngsters, as once out of the shallows, the current can be tremendously and deceptively strong.

If you take a left when you leave the front door to the end of the road, go past the wooden park and you’ll see a metal gate leading through a field. If you follow this path, it’ll take 5 minutes to get to the Warren, which is a lovely stretch of river with a pebble beach and large field to walk around. There are often some Alpacas in the field on the way to the river. Baby Stu, the youngest alpaca is very cute 🦙

A stroll along the old railway track next to the River Wye from Hay bridge ends up on a large common and pebble beach where you can picnic, skim stones or have a swim.
