We believe this is still a privately owned castle (more of a fortified house really)

Great free day out! Open air, the Roman remains are spread over around modern Caerwent and on an impressive scale

The Welsh word "caer" means "fortifications". Although not on the same scale as Caerwent, the Ran ruins at Caerleon are better preserved. Although you have to pay for entry to some things, there is lot more information available to justify the cost

Great for walking, views of the Bristol channel and (of course) bird watching. We especially enjoy the Starlings murmurations in October / November. Oh, and they have a cafe and gift shop!

This museum, on the outskirts of Cardiff (about 50 minutes away) transplants buildings of historic importance to to nation, brick by brick, to this location and restores them back to their glory days! The houses are spread over a wide area so you can spend many days there and see different things. Our particular favourite is the row of terraced houses where each house demonstrates a different period from 1850 to 1980! You can find working bakeries, old fashioned tea room, sweet shops and even have you photo taken old-school. Just make sure you don't choose a rainy day to visit!
