This is a family run Edinburgh staple, it's been in the same stop for over 50 years. It is a self service cafe which is open in the evening too. The food is delicious whether you are vegetarian or not and the fact that it is self service makes it quick for lunch or dinner.

I call this the Scottish food that Scottish people eat. It's non touristy and has a fixed price or a la carte menu. It's worth a visit. I've been going now for over 20 years and still enjoy it. It's located on Victoria Street which in itself is worth a visit

New to the City and the only other of its kind outside of London, that makes it a must surely? Fairly fast service and a kind of tapas style Indian dining experience, although you won't find a dhansak or pathia here.

This is owned by Tom Kitchen, a Mitchelin starred chef. He also owns The Kitchen in Leith and Castle Terrace. The food in Scran and Scallie is more affordable and bistro style. It's suitable for families and groups. You can't always book but they do operate a come and wait service. I would suggest a long leisurely lunch - which is always good value - followed by a stroll around the great vintage and individual shops in Stockbridge, or if shopping isn't for you walk through the mews to the Botanic gardens and Inverleith park (good for kids)

Because it's where JK Rowling started off writing the Harry Potter novels when she was a poor single mum. Until recently she still lived in the city and has been such a tremendous advocate for single mothers.

Who doesn't want a starter of Haggis Ravioli in a cream and whisky sauce? An Edinburgh staple which has all the charm of a family run Italian. Confession - I have the ravioli as a main course portion!!!!!

Step outside the apartment and over the road. Pop in at any time, breakfast, lunch or dinner for those days when you just don't have the energy to wander far.

Traditional bar with a fabulously ornate central bar area. Does great seafood in the restaurant although it's a bit pricey. Have a pint or a 'wee goldie' (whisky) there are plenty to choose from.

You have to climb Arthur's seat if you are able. It takes about an hour to climb to the top but you can stop at any point and walk down. Situated int he Queens Park which is at the bottom of the Royal Mile, I would advise turning left at the car park after Holyrood and walking to the loch (Lake with swans and ducks) then start the climb round to Arthur himself and when you come down continue on the circular route round. Or you can just admire it from the park.

Its not a mall but an area of Edinburgh. If you want away from the high street tourist stores and want something different try Stockbridge. It offers a fabulous selection of antique, vintage and individual shops as well as some great cafes bar and restaurants. It's well worth taking a bit of time out to explore. It's also close to the Botanic Gardens if you want to escape the hussle bussle for a bit.

Sightseeing

Great view across Edinburgh. It was built as a war memorial but the local Authority ran out of money when they built it all those years ago. It's know locally as Edinburgh's disgrace. That said it is beautiful

Neighbourhoods

Easily reached by bus or walk the 15 minutes. This little suburb has some fabulous restaurants, cafe's and bars and a great selection of independent shops. There is a thriving artisan food market on a Sunday morning too - something different for breakfast perhaps? Stockbridge also has some of the best vintage and second hand shops inthe city. Buying re-cycled and 2nd hand clothing and brikabrac is big business in Scotland. Mostly charity shops where the money goes directly to good causes these shops are not to be missed, Stockbridge is also home to the Botanic gardens and Inverleith Park. Gorgeous to walk around or to allow younger visitors the chance to run off some steam.
