An ancient Greek town and one of the eleven ancient Aeolian homes, and had considerable commercial advantages given it had two harbours. It was the birthplace of the academic philosopher Arcesilaus. During the reign of Titus it suffered severely from an earthquake. The town is also mentioned by Hierocles.
