Tucked away on Governors Island is a charming but deserted WWII-era movie theater left over from when the island was a military base. I used to wander in here as a kid on summer days. The theater has a cute little box office in front, and in its heyday you could see a double feature for $2. It’s not operational, but you can go in at your own risk. Free ferries leave from South Street in Manhattan and from Brooklyn Bridge Park every 30 to 60 minutes.

Great view of the city and Statue of Liberty. Bike tour around the island is a must. Nice place to experience nyc.
ONLY open May-October, this auto-less island is home to lots of open space, an old fort to wander through, art installations, and events all summer long. A ferry leaves from pier 6 of Brooklyn Bridge park just around the corner all weekend long.
Bar none, this is my favorite place in NY. You have to take a ferry to get there, but it's like a bike and walk only version of NYC. You get all the views, there are great activities (on weekends), and it offers stunning NYC views!
free ferry ride, lovely views of bklyn, and bridges, arts, entertainment, biking, hiking close to home

“I grew on Roosevelt Island, so I encourage all visitors to take the trip. It is a hidden oasis of the city, and the Tram offers stunning views. When you are there, you can visit the beautiful Four Freedoms Park on the southern end, or the quaint Lighthouse Park at the northern tip. ”

“Travers Park is a 2-acre (8,100 m2) community park and playground in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York City. It is located between 77th and 78th Streets, on the north side of 34th Avenue. More than half of the park is occupied by an asphalt play area, with basketball and tennis courts. A children's playground with leaf-and-vine shaped spray shower occupies about one third of the park. There are also restroom facilities, handball courts, a small picnic area and a bicycle rack. In 2012, a segment of adjacent 78th Street was transformed in a permanent Street Plaza and the sports area of a nearby school was bought by New York City and added to the park.
