The area is best known as Barrio de las Letras and is part of the historic Madrid, and the Madrid de los Austrias. Main spots, Plaza de Santa Ana, Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Mercado de San Miguel, Royal Opera House and Royal Palace. Is a huge area with many historic monuments, museums, but also markets, shops, bars, cafes, restaurants, etc. It can be a bit rowdy on weekends but is definitely one of the landmarks of Madrid.
