The Blue Lagoon is the only Local Nature Reserve in Milton Keynes. The diverse habitat, including shallow and deep water, grassland, scrubland and woodland, has abundance of fauna and flora. Also a recreational facility it's on the site of a former brickworks whose manufacture was a major industry in Bletchley when they first opened in the 1890s. The nature reserve contains two pits: The Water Eaton pit was flooded in the 1940s when the adjoining brook burst its banks. The pure blue colour gave the lake its official name. The Flettons pit was used in brick manufacture until 1970.
