Prainha, not far away from the point of São Lourenço, is a black sand beach of volcanic origin that offers the opportunity for an unusual day at the beach. The landscape surrounding this beach is a stark contrast to that found on most of the rest of the island. Here, the usual shades of green are…

“Beginning at Achada do Teixeira this trail climbs up to the island’s highest peak, Pico Ruivo (1862 m). Next to the Pico Ruivo government house you can gain access to 3 other trails that take the hiker to different parts of the island: PR 1 - Pico do Areeiro footpath (5,1/6,4 Km), which takes you to Pico do Areeiro, the island’s 2nd highest peak (1816m); PR 1.3 - Encumeada Footpath (8.6 Km), goes along the central mountain range to the West; and PR 1.1- Ilha Footpath (8.2 Km), which descends to the parish of Ilha. Along the climb you will meet several shelters as the change in climate is sudden and sharp and the area often becomes covered in a sea of clouds or rests above it.”

“The best “Lapas” from Madeira and such a good garlic bread and views! Specialities: "Lapas Grelhadas" and "Bolo do Caco". Lapas Grelhadas- Limpets (lapas) are a special shellfish variety with only one shell that survives only in clear sea waters, providing it with a unique flavour. Served with garlic, butter and a squeeze of lemon, this specialty comes in a hot pan directly from the grill. Add hot Bolo do Caco with melting garlic butter and parsley and you’ll have the favourite meal starter among locals. Bolo do Caco - A flat, circular bread, shaped like a cake and thus called bolo (Portuguese for 'cake'). It is traditionally cooked on a caco, a flat basalt stone slab. ”

“Fresh grilled fish, seafood and Filete de Espada have to be eaten here! Speciality: "Filete de Espada". Filete de Espada – Espada Preto (Black scabbardfish) is a species that mainly live in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean and much appreciated in Madeira. As a fish it has an ugly look (look for them in Mercado dos Lavradores, in Funchal) but tastes good when cooked. These fish are extremely palatable, with a delicate texture and almost buttery flavour. Fillets that are seasoned with salt, bay leaves, pepper, minced garlic and lemon juice, marinated. Peeled fish fillets are then dipped in egg and flour, fried in oil and sprinkled with fresh parsley, sometimes sided with fried banana.”
