No, 1989 is not the name of a Taylor Swift concept café (although, someone please make that happen), but a Newtown eatery dedicated to the coin-operated joys of old-school games. Unsurprisingly, the café’s soundtrack fires off plenty of plinks and beeps as players face various rounds of combat in…

Really nice bar, back in the 80s-90s where you can play different old arcade games.

Very fun cafe/bar/restaurant with plenty of boardgames and video games! Try playing Exploding Kittens. Also great for a quiet drink while reading a book/working on your laptop.

Mini Golf
“This venue combines mini-golf with a bar (although children are also welcome). Very entertaining and a place to go where adults can enjoy a drink and the younger ones will not be bored.”

Kafe
“Cafe Ism is a short walk away, and their poached eggs with Haloumi and avocado toast is really good. There are tables outside so you can watch the world (and dogs) go by. ”

“Wonderful Japanese food at very reasonable prices. Decor is a little lacking but the great food makes up for it. ”

Genel Eğlence
“Right on the corner of King St and Bray St it couldn't be closer. The place is kind of hard to explain. Its set up like the set of an old movie, sort of a role playing venue where you're a 1940s spy that has to break secret codes, or a detective solving a serial killer case. I've not experienced it myself but people rave about how much fun it is. I want to take my nephews next time they're in town. Good for adults and kids maybe 7 and up.”

Rock Kulübü
“A not-for-profit, artist-run warehouse space in the industrial neighbourhood of Marrickville, near Sydenham station. Head here for one-of-a-kind performances by underground artists from a range of genres. Red Bull hosts a concert series here—Sydney favourites Red Riders recently played a reunion show—and their bookings actively support queer artists as well. The name of the theatre is inspired by the old Red Rattler trains, plus the colour red has long associations with left politics, revolution, and anarchism, and the owners say the rattle refers to their mission of ‘shaking up’ the established cultural scene in Sydney.”
