One should try the local market to see the local produce including the fresh fish arriving dailly. lovely cafés and restaurants in and around it.

Farmers' Market open daily (closed Saturday afternoon and Sunday all day). Great place to buy fresh fruit (including tropical local fruits like papaya or anona), vegetables and fish. If you decide to buy something, always ask for the price in advance.

In the Mercado dos Lavradores entrance is the Cafe Cica. Here is famous place to eat Sandes de carne vinha d’alhos. It’s a madeiran popular sandwich, very popular during Christmas. Can be eaten in the traditional bolo do caco or normal bread. Is pork meat with wine and garlic.
