This one is a little too far afield for a day trip from the Flathead (although, in Montana we just like to drive, so it's certainly possible), but I am throwing it in here in case you're driving to or from southwest or central or eastern Montana along I-90. A rich and fascinating history is detailed in the exhibits here, and it's a great place to stretch your legs while driving through another beautiful ranching valley in Montana. Teddy Roosevelt was a friend of one of the original ranchers, and Norman Maclean fished the Clark Fork river that runs through.

A national historic site honoring the cattlemen of the West. Take a tour, meet the livestock, and see the historic buildings.

Go back in time at the Grant-Kohrs Ranch. Take a walk along the trail and observe some of Deers Lodges finest history!

This is the unit of the National Park Service that preserves and tell the story of cattle ranching. Its the real deal - from the land to building and contents. And it is free!!!
