Explore the Cape of Good Hope on foot
The Cape of Good Hope evokes immense drama as massive waves carve away at the base of 700 foot high cliffs. It’s a corner of the globe steeped in cultural and maritime history, but even more so it is famous for its raw natural beauty: both terrestrial as well as marine. Our journey will start with me meeting you bright & early at your city centre Airbnb after which we'll stop in at one of my favorite bakeries in Kalk Bay for a coffee & pastry before passing through Simon's Town to encounter our precious, endangered, African Penguins. By mid-morning we’ll arrive at the Cape of Good Hope section of the Table Mountain National Park where our trail shoes can be of use! We’ll hike a mix of rugged mountain trail and stretches of white sand beach. During our hike I will share my knowledge of our botanically rich and diverse Fynbos biome, looking out for wildlife, insects, birds and reptiles along the way too. We will do a 2.5-hour circular hike of an easy to moderate difficulty covering 6 km / 4 miles as well as an exploration of the Cape Point and Dias Beach area on a linear or out-and-back trail of an easy to moderate nature. By late afternoon we’ll have to sadly jump back in the car to head into the city via Chapman's Peak Drive – which certainly keeps smiles firmly on our faces! Join me for a memorable day exploring the Cape of Good Hope uniquely on foot.
In the hood
We will meet at the Hout Bay Harbour (Fish on the Rocks) , from there we will start the visit of the community. We will take a long walk around the community; meeting interesting local people as the Khoi or Rastas (knowing the herbs they used for ancient generations) , by there I will explain you the situation of our community; where seafood is flooded and poverty and unemployment is the biggest obstacle to overcome. Then we I will explain you some of the projects that Meraki Bay is developing around Hangberg. After knowing the community we will make a little hike up to the mountain looking for the amazing views that the Sentinel Mountain can offer us. Before finish we can try some local food in the community if the visitors want it. We can make this plan, but as this is a unique experience, if you want to stay more time meeting people from the community, chatting with them or enjoying the environment we can work it out! Other things to note Meeting point (fish on the rocks) At the final of Hout Bay Harbour! So close to Snoekies
Discover township life with a local
I'll be your guide on our interactive walk exploring the authentic diversity of township life. At first glance, life may seem a daily struggle but delve deeper and we’ll find a place of friendship and resilience. Our itinerary begins at MADaboutART, a non-profit organisation using art and creative expression to support children to make positive life choices. You'll see our gallery of narrative artwork telling inspirational stories of the lives of children in the township. In the streets around MADaboutART you’ll experience the culture and ways of the township. We'll see many sights along the way; traditional wooden homes and Government-built brick homes, cattle and pigs grazing, daily laundry, every day is different. We’ll visit the corner shop to find out which foods are family favourites. Finally, we return to MADaboutART to meet the children as they sing, paint, bead, whatever the activity of the day is (curriculum dependent). On Sunday mornings we can join a local church congregation for part of their service. We hope you'll take a little township magic home with you (and leave a little piece of your heart with us) Other things to note: Unique gift items for sale made by children at MADaboutART (R50-R250), bead bracelets, cards & art. Transport available at extra cost. Ground can be uneven, let me know if you’d find this difficult
