One of Edinburgh's best and most famous restaurant, just by the castle, opposite the memorial well where more witches were burnt than anywhere else in Scotland. The setting is gothic splendour. It's not cheap but if you want to treat yourself to one plush meal in the city centre this is the place to go.

Drinks & Nightlife

Always bustling with a lively atmosphere this is the best bar within 5 mins walk of apartment. They also do superior bar food. Both drinks and food a bit on the pricey side though. Nearby good alternatives are Malone's an Irish pub just beyond it and The Mad Hatter just round the corner from it on Torphichen Place.

Teuchters is 10m walk form the apartment heading towards Princes St. It's lively bar with a good selections of beers on tap and an excellent selection of whiskies. Downstairs there is a restaurant called A Room in the West end specializing in Scottish cuisine. They do a pretty good haggis, neeps and tatties as a starter if you want to try it. A teuchter for the uninitiated is a disparaging term for a rather backward, uncouth Highlander. That would be me then.

Rose St, the narrow lane sandwiched between Princess St and George St is famous for its pubs and a favourite Edinburgh pub crawl is trying to walk the length of Rose St having a drink in each pub. Start at Dirty Dick's 20 mins walk from the flat. It's been a pub since 1859 once your eyes adjust to the dim candlelight you'll see every part of the walls and ceiling are crammed with curious artefacts. It's as if it's been added to over the past 150 years and nothing ever removed. From dusty old Dickensian paintings to bedpans, aged whisky bottles and even a witch mounted on her broomstick. More like a museum or old curiosity shop you will discover something new every time you come.

Picturesque Dean Village is an oasis of tranquility just a few minutes walk from the city centre. It once had 11 mills powered by the the flow of Edinburgh's secret rivier, The Water of Leith and providing flour for Edinburgh. From the flat head towards the city centre, past Haymarket and turn left onto Palmerson Pl. Keep going till it turns into Belford Rd, cross the bridge over the Water of Leith and take the path on the right which winds down to the river bank. Follow the delightful riverside path for 10 mins to Dean Village.

The banks of Edinburgh's secret river, the Water of Leith meander tranquilly like a ribbon of countryside in the valley far below Edinburgh city centre.
