Great for walks and resting between sightseeing the neighborhood.
There are several alamedas in Mexico City, literally they are places with poplar trees. (Funny thing, our apartment is in Colonia Los Alamos, which also means the poplar trees.) The Central Alameda was recently remodeled by the city, and is now kept clean, well-lit at night and safe. It oozes history as well, being the place the Inquisition used to carry out its sentences. Several museums surround it, including the Franz Mayer museum (now featuring Tim Burton artwork). The Alameda Central is the backyard of the Palace of Fine Arts. You will find nature, monuments, fountains, street performers, street food, hand crafted art and more.

The heart of the city, El Zocalo comes up constantly in Mexico's ancient and recent history. Zocalo is the starting point for discovering Mexico. The Templo Mayor is only meters away from the beautiful and sinking Cathedral. The Viceroy's Palace faces one side of it, alongside the Presidential Palace. Amazing restaurants surround it. The Palace of Fine Arts is in walking distance. High class stores and street vendors mingle, each giving it a special something. No need for a car, just pop in the Metro and get out at Zocalo station (only 5 stations away from our apartment).

Accessible both by Metro Revolucion and Metrobus Plaza de la República, the Revolution Monument is not only impressive from ground level. Jump on the elevator and enjoy the sight from atop the monument itself. See the children dash in and out of the fountain at its feet. Street vendors, beggars, people taking selfies and flying kites. The cafe at the top is the perfect excuse to sit down a few minutes and let the Mexican air fill you up. After that, walk down to Reforma Street and see for yourself why it is the most emblematic street in Mexico City.

Get a local friend or tour guide to point out the landmarks-downtown is full of them! Morning, afternoon or night, get a good look at traffic on some of our busiest streets, and how public transportation tries to make it more bearable and efficient. Right outside Metro station San Juan de Letran, across the street from Bellas Artes.

Okay, it is a government facility. And not strictly touristic. But get there and see what I am talking about. These buildings are covered with colorful murals made with rocks. Rocks! It has been a landmark for many years. Sadly, the recent earthquake in September damaged it and rumor has it, will be removed and rebuilt with something new. So enjoy it while you can, whether during one of your commutes to downtown on Eje Central or just strolling through the neighborhood.

Frida Kahlo's house is so many things. Picturesque. Emblematic. Strongly iconic. So Mexican. Whether you admire her artwork or not, her house preserved as a museum transports you through time to a home with deep Mexican identity. Colonial and prehispanic, all in one. We suggest calling first to make sure it is open for visiting. If you plan to spend time in the Coyoacan area, the Blue House is worth your while. Not too close to a metro station, you can catch a bus right outside Metro General Anaya (just 5 metro stops from our place).

They navigate you to the best places in the market to taste the wonderful variety of Mexican cuisine.

This little store has a surprising variety of fresh and packaged food. From blue corn tortillas to fruit and vegetables, pick up some of their oaxaca cheese and make your own quesadillas. Also, on Mondays only, the street outside this store is a tianguis (non permanent market). Only 1 block long, this tianguis offers cooked and raw food, supplies and services.

Also, on Mondays only, the street outside this store is a tianguis (non permanent market). Only 1 block long, this tianguis offers cooked and raw food, supplies and services.
Getting Around
Although certain stations can be hard to navigate during rush hours (7-9am and 4-7pm) and rainy days, the Metro is the cheapest transportation (only 5 pesos). These long train tracks run through most of the city. If the Metro doesn't get you where you are going, it gets you pretty darn close. Our apartment is only 1 block away from Xola station. From there you can go north (downtown to the Zocalo and beyond), south (towards Xochimilco), connecting with lines in all directions. It takes you to the airport and major bus centrals from where you can explore nearby states like Puebla, Morelos and Queretaro.
