Max Patch Mountain (10 minute drive, Open Year-Round) - We recommend all of our guests make at least one trip out to Max Patch during their stay. At the peak of Max Patch, hikers have a panoramic view of the Blue Ridge Highlands, including Mount Mitchell, the tallest mountain in the East Coast.

Wolf Creek Falls has been a best kept local secret for decades – our neighbor (Mr. Frisbee) filled us in on this local spot a few years ago, and we even referred to it as “The Secret Waterfall” to guests until 2018, when it became listed on internet map searches.
It is a bit of an adventure to get to Wolf Creek Falls but it is well worth the journey. Drive straight past the parking area for Max Patch (the parking area should be on your right). Continue for about 4miles on this road – the gravel should change color at some point. There will be a sign on the left that says “Rattlesnake Gap,” take a right once you reach the entrance Rattlesnake Gap. On the left there will be signs for “Wolf Creek Falls” on the left. Park at the entrance. From there, it is about a quarter mile hike to the waterfall, which is 75-100ft high.

A unique loop trail winds through this high-elevation, flat valley. Two spurs lead to some of the most photographed and enjoyed waterfalls in the state! You'll pass through alpine-like meadows, stands of Mountain Laurel and Rhododendron, and young northern hardwood forests. Between the falls is a relaxing, lazy section of stream. This is a truly unique and highly recommended hike!

Mount Mitchell is the highest peak of the Appalachian Mountains and the highest peak in mainland eastern North America. It is located near Burnsville in Yancey County, North Carolina; in the Black Mountain subrange of the Appalachians, about 19 miles (31 km) northeast of Asheville. It is protected by Mount Mitchell State Park and surrounded by the Pisgah National Forest. Mount Mitchell's elevation is 6,684 feet (2,037 m) above sea level.
