Located in Reykjavik’s scenic Old Harbor, which is fast becoming a vibrant quarter of the city, MAR Restaurant features a menu inspired by South American and southern European cuisines. Dishes such as the beef tenderloin with truffle Madeira glaze and mushroom risotto with pan fried lobster have proved popular with customers, as has the restaurant’s extensive wine list. Taking its name from the Latin word for ‘sea’, MAR’s interior was conceived by Reykjavik-based designers Hafsteinn Juliusson and Karitas Sveinsdottir and features black treated wood panels faithful to the décor of old harbor houses in the area.

Located on Grandi, just a tad further out than the Old Harbour, you’ll find a collection of little restaurants. The Coocoo’s Nest being an absolute favorite, this place is the best for weekend brunch. On weeknights they alternate different menus, you can find everything from taco Tuesday to sourdough pizza nights. It can get a little crammed in here and they don’t take reservations, but you never have to wait long. Go to dish: The Breakfast Burrito, Soups and Salads and their sandwiches.

Indian food is always a good idea. Hraðlestin is located in a couple of places in Reykjavik and is the fast food brother to Austur Indíafélagið (a fancier white tablecloth variation of the place) the later has been around for ages, but the newly opened Hraðlestin, gives no discounts on the amazing quality of food. Come here for lunch or dinner, and stop by on Wednesdays for an expanded selection of vegan options. Go to dish: Thali, Chicken 65 and Chicken Madras along with all the vegan options.

The Thai Noodle Station was opened in 2009 and has since become a true staple for locals and travelers alike. The menu here is simple, there is soup. You can choose a vegetarian option, beef or chicken and that is that. But don’t be fooled by the simplicity of the menu, the quality of ingredients is outstanding, and there certainly is a dash of secret magic in there, making this simple option, oh so good.

Sakebarinn, because how can you not love sushi, especially when all the fish is freshly caught with the harbor ten minutes aways. There are lots of options for sushi in Reykjavik but Sakebarinn located on the corner of Skólavörðustígur and Laugavegur on the second floor of a mustard yellow house is one that stands out. All the options are made to order, it can take a little bit of time to get the food, but the carefully crafted bites are worth every minute. Go to dish: my mouth is watering just thinking of them, order as many as you think you can possibly eat, they are all great.

Last but not least, for a little taste of Mexico, and really the only good Mexican food you can get in Iceland, Serrano is the place to go to. Founded by two locals after travels south of the border, Serrano emphasizes fresh, healthy, quality food and they succeed in doing so. Think of a healthier version of Chipotle. Go to dishes: Cajun Burrito with a side of everything else that’s on the menu.

Rok, also located close to Hallgrímskirkja. This wonderful little place is easy to spot, it’s in a black house with a green turf roof. Seen from the entrance of the church, slightly down on your right. Down at the old harbor overlooking the ocean, and slightly hidden from sight we have Kopar Restaurant. This one has become a Reykjavik stable, and it never disappoints. Be sure to ask if they can accommodate you with a table upstairs, you’ll have spectacular views. Current go-to dishes: cod tongues as a starter (don’t be scared this taste like the best fish and chips you’ll ever have) and muscles, as a main dish all the seafood options and especially the lobster and crab risotto. First up on the list is a relatively new restaurant called Mat Bar, this tiny little place is located on the corner of Hverfisgata and Bergstaðastræti and is perfect for a quick bite at lunch, or afternoon drinks followed by dinner. At Mat Bar the focus is on small plates, order somewhere between two to five, depending on how hungry you are. These are also fantastic to share. Last time I went here I sat next to some people visiting from Portugal, it was their third time in two days eating here. It made me feel a little better about my frequent visits. My go to plates: arctic char, cod, everything cheese, crushed potatoes, glazed beets, scallops and all the desserts.

Parks & Nature

A comfortable two-kilometre walking path circles the small tranquil lake where many Icelanders come to fish in the warmer months. Trails also lead away from the water toward the hills, looping their way through the hushed forest and mossy undergrowth. From breaks in the treeline it's possible to catch sight of the cone-shaped Keilir Mountain in the distance. Also tucked along the paths are a memorial grove, a scouting centre, and of course, dozens of pleasant spots where one can stop to rest and to gather serene memories.

Tucked away on a quiet street in Hafnarfjörður is the enchanting Hellisgerði Park. A pathway twists beside the lovely pond and through the lava rocks that buckle and fold into tiny caves and mysterious nooks. This park is built on a landfill over the old city rubbish dumps. Its layout was designed early in the 20th century by Danish architect Kjerboe, in close collaboration with mayor Knútur Zimsen. Work on the Pavilion Garden began after 1920 and it is still broadly in its original form. The work was undertaken in phases and the part closest to Hringbraut was completed as late as 1954. Sculptures in the park are Thorvaldsen´s Selfportrait (previously on Austurvöllur square), poet Jónas Hallgrímsson by Einar Jónsson and Man and Woman by Tove Ólafsson.

There are a lot more animals at the zoo than most people think. Icelandic farm animals, mammals from the country's wildlife, in addition to a small exhibition of reptiles, amphibians and insects. Playgrounds are open in the summertime as well as on the weekends during the winter, weather permitting. Castles, zip-lines and other equipment are always open. It's also nice to just stroll around in the beautiful surroundings. The restaurant serves food all year and there's a shop open too in the summer. An electric grill is available for all guests to use, perfect for grilling up some simple dishes.

næfellsnes, sometimes known as “Iceland in miniature,” has it all: mountains, waterfalls, lava fields, coastal cliffs, hot springs, and a glacier perched right out on its tip. “Stykkishólmur and Arnarstapi are a beautiful little towns,” said the panel. “Then there’s Djúpalónsandur, a black beach with rusted shipwreck pieces and lifting stones; the Eldborg crater; Kirkjufell; and a new visitor centre for the glacier.” There are also great restaurants at Hotel Búðir and Narfeyrarstófa. It’s a lot to squeeze into just one day—but you can sure try.

eljalandsfoss is one of the best known waterfalls in Iceland. It is 65 meters high according to the National Land Survey of Iceland and it is breathtakingly beautiful. It is a must visiting Seljalandsfoss when visiting the south-coast, you will not regret it! It is possible to walk behind the waterfall so bring a raincoat as you will get wet from the drizzle. It is awesome walking behind Seljalandsfoss, especially on a sunny day when one can catch a rainbow. In winter time the path is closed when it gets too slippery and dangerous to walk behind the waterfall.

The greatest attraction of Skógar is of course the beautiful 60-metre high Skogáfoss waterfall in the river Skógá. Like the legends of buried treasures of Egill Skallagrímsson in Mosfell near Reykjavík and Ketilbjörn in Mosfell near Skálholt, there is a similar legend about the settler Þrasi who is believed to have buried his chest of gold under the Skogafoss waterfall. One of the finest folk museums in Iceland is situated in extraordinarily beautiful natural surroundings.

Taxis in Iceland don’t look like anything in particular. They are not all yellow like in New York or black and oddly shaped like in London. In Iceland you don’t hail a cab, you call for one. If you are downtown, there are also a few taxi stands where the cabs wait in line for the next tour and you can also get one from there. There are two major taxi companies in Iceland, Hreyfill Bæjarleiðir and BSR, and a few smaller ones that I personally never use. The number for Hreyfill is +354-588-5522 and BSR +354-561-0000.
