Food Scene

I lived in the deserts of Southern California and grew up with Mexican food. I was pleasantly surprised to find the best Mexican food I've ever had in Hillsboro, OR. If you are looking for a upscale fancy dining experience though, this isn't it. If you are looking for a hole-in-the-wall that is always packed, mostly by Spanish speaking immigrants (good sign), with inexpensive but delicious food - this is a hidden gem.

Two block walk away from the house for some of the best pho in Hillsboro. Tiny place, can get packed, Vivi herself is freindly and awesome. Perfect to get a nice bowl to warm yourself up on a rainy day.

Was listed as one of the best Japanese restaurants in the country from a 2006 Zagat survey. An izayaka is a type of informal Japanese pub. They are casual places for after-work drinking. So HUGE saki selection and the food is made in a "tapas" style format. Many small plates of very tasty food. Expect to spend from $11-$30 on food. Pro tip" Get the gyu tataki (seared beef in ponzu sauce), trust me - you will thank me later.

Great atmosphere, craft brew, and food. You really need to experience the McMenamins culture in Oregon.

If you are a cider or craft beer aficionado, this is a MUST visit. Kevin has been a brewmaster at Main Street Brewing supply for almost 30 years. He got a degree in biology, specializing in fermentation. He's been the "go to" guy for homebrewers, commercial wineries and craft brewers for decades. When his business got too large for downtown Hillsboro, he moved to a larger location near highway 26. At this time he also decided to open up a brewpub next door to the brewing supply shop. He has 34 local craft brews on tap, 600 in bottles surrounding the restaurant, and many of his menu items are made with beer/cider.

Re-purposed Masonic lodge from the 1920's. Filled with art, restaurants, a movie theater, 4 separate bars, hotel rooms, soaking pool, and disc golf course. You really do need to see it to believe it. Beer brewed on premise, plus they have their own spirits, wine, and cider. Good food, great atmosphere, great beer, fun art all over the walls. Very Portland.

Sightseeing

If you want a pleasant walk to relax after work, this is a hidden gem. Walk west on Sunrise (the road the house is on) until it dead ends into Jackson School Road. Turn a left and walk down to the park next to the Cavalry Lutheran church. Enter the park and go to the very back of the park. Washington County was legislation preventing too much development. For every x amount of developed land, you have to include a percentage of old growth forest. The start of a large patch of old growth forest, with paths, creeks, and a small meadow begins st the back of the park. You can get lost there for an hour and relax.

The county fairgrounds and a Max station (light rail to downton Portland) are a 15 minute walk from the house. There is generally something happening at the fairgrounds on weekends.
