Culebra is one of Puerto Rico’s gems. Diamond-dust sand and colorful marine life is what you will find when you visit one of the top beaches in the world, which is located there, 20 miles off the coast of Fajardo. This peaceful tropical island holds countless natural areas and pristine locations to explore and enjoy during your stay. Or, just lay on the beach and go swimming occasionally. Culebra totals a little over 10 square miles and used to serve as a U.S. Naval base until 1975. A few of the base’s remains can be found along the shore of the town, including a rusted tank, one of the iconic photo ops for visitors. Culebra is surrounded by more than 20 cays and vibrant underwater landscapes. It is a haven for those interested in getting closer to ocean life while snorkeling or diving. More than 20% of Culebra has been preserved as a National Wildlife Refuge for more than 100 years. The refuge serves as a habitat for endangered sea turtles and seabirds, among other creatures. Other popular activities on Culebra include “beach-bumming”. Places like Flamenco Beach have been recognized on lists of the best beaches in the world. And while that’s the most famous, there are also others that are more remote, with untamed charm.

Historic Place, Shopping and Food Scene

Come and explore the second oldest city in the Western Hemisphere. Old San Juan is actually an island connected to the main island by bridges on the eastern side. The oldest section is on the west side and walled in on 3 sides. The historic city is divided into seven square blocks. The northern side of the city is uphill and is comprised of the residential area of town. The southern part, or port area (ports 1-4), is the commercial and tourist section that is comprised of shops, piers, and most of the restaurants. The city’s eastern side is protected by Fort San Cristobal. The western area of the city contains Paseo dela Princesa, La Fortaleza (Governor’s Mansion) and Fort El Morro. It is the oldest area of town where you can find 300 to 450 year old homes and buildings. Old San Juan, properly known as San Juan Antiguo, is the oldest city in the U.S. and its territories. The Spanish settled San Juan in1521. It replaced “Caparra,” Puerto Rico’s first settlement, as the island’s capital.

Drinks & Nightlife

Just over the bridge from Old San Juan and Puerta de Tierra, Condado is one of Puerto Rico's most fashionable places to call home. Cartier, Louis Vuitton, and Ferragamo are among the names you'll see on the storefronts here. Sophisticated bistros and restaurants draw lively crowds at night, and the beach is always popular. Interestingly, Condado's hotels don't follow the high-end trend; you can find great deals that put you in the heart of San Juan's ritziest neighborhood.

Historic Site

Learn the history behind one of Spain's major military engineering marvels: from colonization to the Second World War. Few landmarks are more representative of Puerto Rico's legacy within the Caribbean and the Americas than Castillo San Felipe del Morro. This fortification on the corner of the islet of Old San Juan now greets cruise ships as they leisurely sail in and out of the bay, but during most of its nearly 500-year history, it was an important military outpost for Spain and later the United States.

The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (Museum of Art of Puerto Rico) in Santurce is packed with contemporary and classic pieces that date all the way back to the 17th century. Nearby, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Puerto Rico Contemporary Museum) is not to be missed if you want a taste of the island's modern side. The island’s long-lasting relationship with art – whether it’s view in museums, galleries, or street murals – has paved the way for a colorful, intriguing way to learn about the island’s culture and history. You'll find more art in places like Ponce and Bayamón as well. Finding a piece of local artwork, whether it’s a painting or hand-carved figurine, is the perfect souvenir to take back home with you! If you feel adventurous and have time an overnight drive to Ponce in the South will get you to enjoy plenty of places including the world-renown Museo de Arte de Ponce.
