Housed in what used to be a bank in the 1800s, this is a small, sweet little museum featuring local history. Here I learned where the name Chemung comes from and what it means. There are permanent exhibits on the Native Americans, the Civil War, The Gilded Age, and Mark Twain (of course!). And the temporary exhibits are engaging.

This structure now sits on Elmira College property and is a tourist attraction for anyone interested in Mark Twain. It's where he wrote some of his most well-known books and used to belong to Quarry Farm, which is perched in the hills overlooking the Chemung Valley.

This church is famous for its progressive founders who supported the abolitionist movement, and many of its members assisted with the Elmira station of the Underground Railroad. You can tour this landmark church and get a feel for its history.

This museum is across from one of the entrances to Woodlawn Cemetery. It's the former home of escaped slave, John W. Jones. In addition to explaining the importance of Jones and Elmira's role in the Underground Railroad, the museum highlights the history of African Americans who settled in the Southern Tier of New York.
