Parks & Nature

Excellent for walks and cycling with many miles of trails and bikes for hire. Recent investment by the owners (Buccleuch Estates) has resulted in newly renovated paths and opened up the old stable block with new cafe, restaurant and gift shops down by the South Esk river.

A hidden gem of a walk through some stunning riverside scenery. From our house/hut to Roslin is approximately 2 miles / 3 km and a 1 hour walk for a relatively able/fit adult, over variable surfaces/paths. At Roslin there is the Castle, Chapel and old deserted gunpowder mills to explore as well as cafes and country pubs to relax in.

Access can be gained here into the heart of the Pentland Hills National Park. There is a great choice of paths and quiet roads to start a walk but soon you'll find options to turn left or right up into the hills that top out at 1900ft (580m), or continue on the flatter tarred road right up past Glencorse and Loganlee reservoirs. You can turn back at any stage or find loops round either reservoir to shorten or lengthen your walk. http://www.pentlandhills.org/pentlandhills/downloads/file/75/discover_the_pentland_hills_regional_park

Arts & Culture

A little known site of the 1303 battle between an English raiding army of 30,000 lead by Sir John Segrave and an army of 10,000 Scots lead by John III Comyn (then Guardian of Scotland but more famous for being killed at the alter in Dumfries by Robert the Bruce) in 1306. No doubt the numbers will have been exaggerated when memories of the battle were put in writing but local landmarks still hark back to the battle (The Kill Burn - flows into the Bilston Burn, Hewan Bank forms part of the slopes down to the River North Esk and Shinbanes Field where many human bones have been unearthed over the centuries).
