And for a different take on Franklin brisket and other smoked meats, head over to Asian smokehouse Loro where brisket is served with Thai herbs and chili gastrique and turkey breast is paired with apricot chutney. Hours: 11 a.m. until sold out (usually around 2 to 3 p.m.) Tuesday through Sunday. So regionally minded that even the beer and wine are exclusively from Texas, Cherrywood's Dai Due is equally satisfying for a light breakfast or a major blow-out meat fest at dinner. The brick-and-mortar incarnation is everything Austin hoped for from the former farmers' market stand/supper club from chef Jesse Griffiths. The Texas-forever menu includes everything from heavier dishes like giant rib-eyes, fried chicken, and wild boar confit, to lighter fare, like empanadas. 2406 Manor Rd. Detroit-style pizza in a Texas-only craft beer bar? Hell yes. The brothers Hunt make some of the best pies in town. Eater Austin’s restaurant of the year brings all-day, counter-service vibes to West 5th Street. Better Half’s casual menu is full of laidback dishes with refined but not pretentious takes, like, say the breakfast sandwiches with hash brown patties, cauliflower tater tots, or the steak and eggs with kimchi butter. It’s all found in a space that feels appropriately Austin (large patio, killer coffee and beer lineups). It makes sense since it’s from the experts behind favorite East Austin beer and coffee spot Brew & Brew.

The longtime marketplace up in Hyde Park area makes use of its fresh seafood supply for its counter-service restaurant. The menu boasts fresh oysters (both raw and grilled), grilled or blackened fish, and po’ boys. The blackboard highlight catches of the day for one-off specials.

Valentina’s Tex Mex Barbecue mashes up two of the city’s favorite foods into one mega-meal. Pitmaster Miguel Vidal melds the best of what Austin has to offer — smoked brisket or pulled pork can be found in tacos and sandwiches — down in South Austin. There is a new brick-and-mortar to look forward to, but until then, head to the trailer for barbecue, tacos, and sandwiches, along with changing specials like burgers, pastrami, and more. Mornings are dedicated to excellent breakfast tacos, especially the Real Deal Holyfield taco with a slice of smoked brisket from Valentine’s Tex Mex BBQ. Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. or until sold out Monday; 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. or until sold out; breakfast ends at 11 a.m.. Recommended orders: Real Deal Holyfield breakfast taco, smoked brisket taco

Swimming Holes w/in 10 miles

Central Texans are lucky – we have one of the largest networks of rivers and lakes in the state. These vast networks make for some pretty amazing swimming holes. It would be a shame not to take advantage of them during the dog days of summer.
Barton Springs Pool has attracted all walks of life since its inception in 1837, from free-spirited, topless hula hoopers to congressmen to famous film directors. You can always count on a place to swim at Barton Springs Pool, and you can also always count on the water being a brisk 68 degrees. Another spot in the same location is the Barton Springs Spillway, a popular spot for swimmers to bring their dogs, and a great place to enjoy the brisk spring water flowing out of Barton Springs Pool without paying the entrance fee. Bring your tube, jump in the cold water, and enjoy the day for free!

Moderately hidden away down a one-mile hike in the Barton Creek Greenbelt, Sculpture Falls is one of the choice spots for Austin natives to cool off during the summertime (though it’s rather gorgeous all year round). You’ll find people doing everything from relaxing in the water to throwing a football to canoeing after a heavy rainfall! 1710 Camp Craft Rd, Austin, TX 78746 Pro Tip: Only go if it has rained in Austin recently, because parts of Barton Creek tend to dry up if there is a summer drought. As a general rule of thumb, wait a couple days for the bacteria to clear from the water after a heavy rain.

This famous swiming hole is located about a mile upstream from Barton Springs on Barton Creek. You could also get to it by taking the Spyglass Road access point and then turning left onto the trail once you get down to the creek. This should be a good size pool when the water is up after a rain and there are additional places to try both upstream and downstream from this site. This place will get crowded in the afternoons so consider yourself warned. There also are some nice bluffs in the area, although unlike in the old days now houses dot the top of the cliffs.
