Marmalade has been serving beautifully crafted, palate-stunning dishes in the heart of Old San Juan for over a decade. Chef/owner Peter Schintler brings his international influences and training to fresh local ingredients, offering tasting menus, vegetarian, raw, and vegan options, à la carte, and a bar menu. Marmalade has a dim, modern, almost nightclub-like vibe—think backlit bar, sexy mood lighting, and lots of couples cozied up in the plush banquettes, sipping pretty cocktails. It's neither too formal nor too relaxed, and although you certainly don't need to come in your finest attire, you shouldn't come straight from the beach, either. Eating here is an experience. There's no a la carte menu, just three tasting menus—you can choose from four courses , five courses , or six courses , with the option of wines pairings with each. The food is Puerto Rican-international fusion, with a fresh, veggie-heavy focus; like the kimchi Boricua made with organic local vegetables and starfruit; or the vegetarian spaghetti and "meatballs," made with spaghetti squash and cooked in a local heirloom tomato sauce. Chef Peter Schintler apprenticed with Gordon Ramsay and worked at Le Cirque, and his culinary mastery and creativity is evident in every single dish.

El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System but it is also a sacred place in Puerto Rican culture. Many believe its name comes from the Taíno word Yuke, or "white earth," a reference to the clouds that gather around the forest's mountainous peak; others believe it derives from Yúcahu, the Taíno deity of fertility. Today, this national treasure is an excellent destination if you want to immerse yourself in nature. Here's a look at some of the top things to see and do in El Yunque, from bathing in natural pools beneath waterfalls to taking in the gorgeous scenery from its many hiking trails.

El Portal is the major visitor center of El Yunque National Forest and opened in 1996. In 2017, Hurricanes Irma and Maria caused structural damage to the building resulting in the need for major building repairs and reconstruction. The facility reopened in January 2022 and offers visitor information, exhibits, a store, cafe, and theater. The sustainable and open architecture visually connects to the surrounding Forest and incorporates elements of artwork by local artists in the design. Wood from trees blown down during the hurricanes is incorporated into some exhibits. Ranger led interpretive and educational programs are offered. An interpretive trail provides the opportunity to explore the surrounding area which was previously a farm and a nursery. A portion of the trail is accessible. El Portal de El Yunque offers the opportunity to see the endangered Puerto Rican Parrot and learn more about the species recovery efforts.

Built from 1634 until 1765, for centuries the Castillo San Cristóbal has been standing guard at the eastern gate of Old San Juan. The imposing fortress was built to guard the city from enemies approaching by land, serving as a counterpart to Castillo San Felipe del Morro. The citadel covers over 27 acres and is the largest one made by the Spaniards in the New World. Fort San Cristóbal, as it is also known, defended the San Juan Bay from foreign attacks, such as the Battle of San Juan in 1797, perpetrated by Ralph Abercromby. The vast esplanade is a great place to explore around and enjoy the beautiful view of Old San Juan. This whole system, which is San Juan National Historic Site of defense, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.

A representative landmark of Puerto Rico’s colonial legacy, the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, or El Morro for short, is an impressive citadel that sits at the very top of Old San Juan. Its construction began in 1539 and concluded around 1790; during those 250 years, the castle became a six-level fortress designed to protect the island from attackers approaching by sea. The bastion – integrated by barracks, dungeons, and storerooms – still holds some of the original cannons facing the ocean. This fortress has seen many battles over the centuries, from Sir Francis Drake’s attack in 1595 to the 1898 Bombardment of San Juan by the US Navy, but it has never been defeated. In 1898, as a result of the Spanish-American War, the island changed hands from Spain to the United States. The castle houses the oldest lighthouse on the island, built under Spanish rule in 1846. El Morro was later designated as part of Fort Brooke and actively used as a military installation during the First and Second World Wars. In 1961, the US Army retired El Morro, passing it on to the National Park Service to establish a museum.
