Food scene

Great little family restaurant walking distance (or a *very* short drive) from our house in Dover. Super kid-friendly -- they have two small aquariums and a few old-school video games and a kid's menu. Pretty standard traditional American fare with a couple of suprises on the menu and HUGE portions. Owned by the family of famed snowboarder and Olympic Gold Medalist, Kelly Clark -- they have a display case with some of her trophies!

I can't say we love Dots of Dover as much as the original Dots in Wilmington, but it's still a solid diner and very nearby. Only open for breakfast and lunch, closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

The original Dot's is a local favorite. It's about a 15 min drive over to Wilmington from our house in Dover, but it's right on Main Street near several cute shops. The menu is classic diner fare -- good quality and good prices. It's family friendly and has an OK selection of beer and wine. They're open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; but they close at 8pm during the week and 9pm on weekends. Closed Mondays. Can get busy - if there's a wait, we'd recommend MLT, Jezebels, or Village Roost as a nearby alternative.

The Last Chair is a great place for families and big groups (not for those wanting a quiet dinner out). It's less than a 5 min drive from our house in Dover. Their big menu is traditional american and decent (they also have pizza), but the main reason it's good for families is the "kid zone" - a huge arcade with video games, skee ball, air hockey, etc.

Vermont is not known for it's outstanding pizza, but we think Tony's is the best in the area. They also make great hot subs and have a decent beer selection. It's also walking distance from the house or a *very* short drive. Take-out only. Closed Sundays and Mondays.

Nomad kitchen food trailer has been an outstanding addition to the area. They've done different things over the past few years, but their latest iteration is all about Ramen, Bao Buns, and Rice Bowls. The food is great and it's SO nice to have something other than diner / pub fare. They're only open Thursday through Sunday.

Sawmill Bar & Table is a really lovely high-end restaurant within the grounds of the Sawmill Inn. Their outdoor space provides a view of their beautiful gardens and pond. The indoor space is gorgeous, cozy, and candle-lit. The food and drinks are both excellent.

Nice little spot for dinner or drinks. They often have live music and are open most nights because of the Inn on the same location.

Great little brewery nearby (less than 5 min drive from our house). Obviously there is major competition farther up north in Vermont, but there aren't a ton of breweries in this area so we're grateful for Snow Republic. They have surprisingly great food as well - my favorite is the smash burger.

American Flatbread is a new addition to the area and while VT isn't known for their pizza, American Flatbread is a solid regional chain. Plus, the space has been recently renovated and is good for large groups. It's also walking distance or a *very* short drive from the house.

Relatively new addition to the area and really awesome space. This is a top-notch brewery doing great things. The prices are a little high but the quality is a cut above. Plus, it's a really cool space -- they've rehabbed one of the areas oldest Inns and built out a beautiful deck overlooking the river.

Essentials

7-11 is open 24-hours (nothing in the area is), it has an 802 VT liquor, wine, and beer store, and it has basic essentials like eggs, milk, and coffee. Their gas prices are high, but other than that -- we are VERY reliant on our local 7-Eleven like most folks in the area. Plus, it's walking distance or a *very* short drive from our house.

This gas station has the cheapest gas around. The 7-eleven is obviously a great convenience store, but their gas is a lot higher, particularly premium and diesel. W&B is credit card only and there's no attendant or convenience store, but their gas prices are the best in the area.

Shaws is the nearest large supermarket. It's about a 15-minute drive to Shaws over in Wilmington. If you plan to spend some time over there (and you should - Main Street is really cute), you may as well stock up on essentials.

Small market located less than 5 minutes drive from our house (toward the mountain). They have an OK produce and grocery selection, but a solid butcher and deli. Decent beer and wine. Best deal is the lunch special sandwich $5 for sandwich, chips and drink.

Sightseeing

Mt Snow is the premiere ski resort in the area. Definitely check out their website for the Snow Report and discounted Lift Tickets (often $20 cheaper than buying onsite or day-of). It's only about 5 minutes from our house in Dover.

The trail head is about a 15 minute drive from our house in Dover. The hike itself is a 4.0 mile out and back (not a loop) trail to the summit of Haystack Mountain with about 1000 feet elevation change, classified as "moderate" by All Trails (you can get more reviews and info on their website). Depending on the hiker, it may take 2-3 hours round-trip. We love this hike because you rarely run into any other hikers and there are gorgeous views from the summit.

The Valley Trail connects the villages of Wilmington and Dover. The southern end of the trail is located off Route 9 in the center of Wilmington across from Reardon’s Crossing Bridge - the northern end terminates at Mount Snow in Dover. Nine trailheads and parking areas along the way and several spurs off the main trail enable users to hike all or part of the trail. One "easy" option: at the trail junction across the bridge in town, the Riverwalk splits into two footpaths forming a small loop that takes 5 minutes to walk. At the top of the loop, hikers can turn right and follow the trail for 1.5 miles to Harriman Reservoir.

Jamaica state park is a really lovely state park to visit in spring, summer, and fall. It's about a 20-minute drive from our house. There are: picnic facilities, overnight camping, a nature center with programs for children, and several hiking trails including a waterfall trail we've done with our 4-year-old hiking on his own. The primary trail is an old "rail trail" and is universally-accessible and great for easy walking, jogging or biking. Open to all foot travel and bicycles. The trail meanders along the West River, following the old bed of the West River Railroad. The trail is stroller-friendly -- we LOVE it.
