The largest botanical gardens in the Caribbean, the Jardín Botánico Nacional graces the capital city with over 400 acres (two-square kilometers) of nature preserve filled with the island’s native trees, including multiple species of palm, flowers—over 300 species of orchids—and birds, such as the country’s national palm chat. A trolley tour takes you through its multiple exotic corners, the most popular of which is the Japanese garden, with a manicured, lakeside lawn ideal for picnics. Beginner or avid bird watchers can sign up for guided hikes organized by the Hispaniola Ornithological Society.

Lined with the Caribbean Sea on one end, and rows of brand hotels, restaurants, and nightlife on the other, the Malecón comes to life in the afternoon at sunset, and continuing into the night. Residents stroll its length, past two historic obelisk-shaped monuments, for an evening breeze, jogging, and biking, or just to enjoy one of the seafront recreational parks such as Plaza Juan Barón and Güibia. Renovated in 2017, the Malecón is livelier than ever, with marked biking and rollerblade lanes, as well as more esplanades and relaxation seating along the sea. This place offers children rides and entertainment carnaval style.

Despite this, in 1502 it was moved to the west side of the river by the command of Nicolás de Ovando, governor of La Española at the time, thus founding the new city of Santo Domingo de Guzmán. Some time later, in 1507, the city obtained the Royal Statute of being the first European city located in the New World. In 1990, the UNESCO declared it World Heritage Site, appraising it as one of the most beautiful old towns in the Caribbean. Going through the gorgeous streets of the Colonial area, you’ll discover buildings from the early years of the 1500s, such as the Alcázar de Colón Fortress, the Primada Cathedral or the Ozama Fortress, among many others. The main streets composing its valued heritage are El Conde, Las Damas and Las Mercedes.
