Atlantic Beach is known as the most historic community on the East Coast. In fact, a lot of historians believe that it’s the first ever year-round Native American settlement in North America. Today, it’s one of the most popular beaches in Jacksonville, beloved for its outdoor pursuits, easy-going vibe and inexpensive activities. At this beach, you can enjoy a variety of water sports, walk along the sandy shoreline, hunt shells, or just chill and admire the views.

Every Saturday in downtown Jacksonville (about a block from the Cummer Museum), hundreds of craftspeople and vendors gather at the Riverside Arts Market. You'll notice everything from handmade pottery and silk screens to T-shirts and fresh produce at the different booths. While you're browsing, you can enjoy entertainment from numerous street performers, and when you begin to feel peckish, you can grab something to eat from one of the many street food sellers who set up shop here. Past visitors said that though the market is small, it's worth perusing. Others appreciated the free nearby parking and the market's covered location under an overpass (perfect for hot or rainy days).

Located across the St. Johns River from downtown Jacksonville, the Museum of Science & History is worth a visit if you've got kids in tow. Although some recent visitors noted that the museum itself is a bit small, many say that it was a big hit with members of the whole family. Displays include information on everything from the ocean to the history of Jacksonville to the human body, and interactive exhibits help keep younger visitors engaged. If your little ones need to get rid of some pent-up energy, you can take them to the museum's KidSpace, a spacious playground designed with kids ages 5 and younger in mind. If you can, you should catch a show in the planetarium, according to recent travelers. A few past visitors also said the museum's exhibits could benefit from updates, but most agreed this is a good stop for rainy days.

Sitting on the edge of the Trout River, about 7 miles north of downtown Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is a must if you're visiting the city with kids. Set in Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve – one of the last bits of unspoiled wetlands along the Atlantic Coast – Kingsley Plantation is the former home of Zephaniah Kingsley. Kingsley moved to Fort George Island in the early 1800s with his wife and three children. His wife, Anna, originally hailed from Senegal and was purchased by Kingsley as a slave. She was freed by her husband in 1811, upon which she acquired her own land on the St. Johns River and purchased slaves. When the family began occupying the Kingsley Plantation in 1814, Anna helped manage a workforce of roughly 60 enslaved people, who produced cotton, citrus fruit, sugarcane and corn on the plantation thereby supplying the Kingsley family's wealth. Because the free Black population in East Florida (a Spanish province) maintained certain rights and privileges at the time, owning land and enslaved people was a common occurrence for free people of African descent. This would all change when Florida became a territory of the United States in 1821 and racial discrimination began to shape legislative policies.

Originally built in the 1960s, it was the world’s biggest and tallest fountain at the time, and it moved more than 17,000 tons of water per minute from three separate pumps. The jet streams could reach heights of 100 feet in the air! The fountain is a bit more modest today, but it’s still a sight to behold. Colored lights flash on special occasions, and it’s often used as a backdrop for things like fireworks displays.

Best Italian Restaurants

One of the Jacksonville’s most talked about Italian restaurants is Catullo’s Italian. Hidden in a shopping center between a Walmart and a dry cleaner, the intimate restaurant often has a wait of an hour or more, even on weeknights. To start, try the arancini, which is made with a base of Calabrian chili and Parmigiano risotto and stuffed with tangy goat cheese before being breaded and fried. The pear fiocchi pasta is a fan favorite on the menu. It starts with pasta purses stuffed with sweet pears and three different kinds of cheese, then tossed with a caramelized pear, blue cheese, and goat cheese sauce. The dish is finished with pieces of crispy and salty fried prosciutto for a perfect bite.

From the outside, Enza’s doesn’t look like much since it’s located in a strip mall in the Mandarin neighborhood. But once guests walk inside, the dim lighting, white tablecloths, and smells of Sicilian food change any preconceived notion about the restaurant. Be sure to start any meal at Enza’s with the restaurant’s iconic Pomodoro Caprese, which uses house-made mozzarella cheese and pesto, along with all the usual suspects, like basil and tomatoes. Meat lovers will enjoy the Italian sausage and meatballs platter, which comes with both types of meat smothered in peppers, onions, and tomato sauce and covered in mozzarella cheese.

Located at the St. John’s Town Center, Prati Italia is a fantastic family-friendly spot specializing in American-Italian cuisine. Sharable entrees like the salumi and cheese platter are great options for a crowd, while the Roman-style pizza comes to the table in big squares that are crispy on the bottom and fluffy on the inside. As for pasta, the housemate sheets and noodles are used to create many dishes, but a standout dish is the lasagna which is 13 layers thick. The tray of lasagna sits overnight before being portioned. Just before being served, the brick of lasagna is deep fried to get its crispy edges and is topped with more sauce and cheese before being devoured by hungry guests.

Midtown Table is a modern Italian restaurant where pasta, bread, and so much more are handmade daily and served to hungry guests. Dinner is a relaxed atmosphere, where sharable plates include a seasonal preparation of burrata cheese, white bean hummus with Italian sausage, or house-made bread. Each of the house-made pasta is worth trying, but a fan-favorite is the Midtown agnolotti, which is similar to a ravioli, with savory mushroom duxelles, Italian sausage, spinach, peppers, and a white wine cream sauce to bring it all together.

Santioni’s Italian Restaurant is located a strip mall in Fleming Island and has been open for almost 20 years. The dinner-only restaurant serves up classic Italian-American fare like lasagna and baked ziti. For something a little more hearty, consider the eggplant parmigiana, which is a guest favorite at the restaurant. The dish starts with sliced eggplant that’s been graded and fried before being topped with red sauce and cheese. It’s served with a side of spaghetti marinara and a soup or salad. No matter the dish, know that the servings are large, and there will likely be leftovers for the next day too.

Sushi hotspot Norikase boasts an almost speakeasy-like atmosphere that is amplified by the nine-seat sushi bar where diners can chat with the chefs about ingredients and menu items as the chefs create different handrolls. The restaurant is known for its reservation-only chefs tasting omakase menu, which is a first for the city. The seafood for the omakase menu is all sourced from Tokyo’s Toyosu Market and changes weekly based on what’s available.

Sushi X is one of the only restaurants in Jacksonville that has an all-you-can-eat menu without being a Chinese or Japanese buffet. The restaurant has a wide selection of rolls on the all-you-can-eat menu and most are just a few pieces each, so guests can try quite a few without being full. But be warned, those who don’t finish their orders will be charged above the flat-rate cost for over-ordering. One way to avoid the extra cost is to order just a few things at a time and determine after each ordering session when to stop.

Since opening in 2013, Kazu has become a must-dine in Jacksonville for sushi fans. The Mandarin neighborhood restaurant is small, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in superb sushi and ultra-fresh sashimi. Diners looking to get a peek at the making of their dinner should sit at the small sushi bar where you can watch the chefs prep each roll. Those looking for something more adventurous on the menu should try out the Spicy Tuna Popper, which is Kazu’s take on a jalapeno popper, with the spicy pepper, cream cheese, spicy tuna, and eel sauce to add a bit of sweetness.
