The Marathon Lake is an artificial lake at a distance of about 45 km from the center of Athens. This lake actually works like a water reservoir that supplies the town of Athens with drinking water. The dam was constructed from 1926 to 1929 to cover the growing needs of the capital for water after the huge immigration wave that followed the Asia Minor War (1919-1922). This was the sole water supplier for Athens until 1959 when water was pulled from Yliki Lake, close to the town of Thebes. The American company Ulen&Co was selected to construct the dam, a 54 m tall and 285 m long gravity dam. The reservoir has a maximum depth of 54 m and it is used since today to cover the needs of Athens. This lake matches perfectly with the natural surrounding and above the dam, there is a coffee restaurant with an amazing view. This lake is a popular excursion for residents, within only a 1-hour drive from the city center. At the time of its construction, the Marathon Dam was a major symbol of modernization for Greece. The dam is found about 10 min drive from the location of the Marathon Battle, signifying the connection of future with the past and was built with high-quality Pantelic marble, the same material that was used in the Parthenon. At the base of the dam, the workers built a replica of the Athenian Treasury Temple in Delphi. The plaque on this reads: To commemorate their victory at the battle of Marathon, the Athenians erected a treasury at Delphi. This building is a replica and commemorates a victory at Marathon in wrestling from nature its life-giving water for the citizens of Athens.

An ancient deme in northeast Attica, on the Euboian gulf. Excavations have brought to light the sanctuary of Nemesis - the most important sanctuary of that divinity in ancient Greece - the fortress, public buildings, remains of houses and many grave enclosures. Human activity in the area is evident as early as Neolithic times. Archaeological evidence shows that there was a sanctuary here from the beginning of the 6th century B.C. The archaic temple was destroyed by the Persians in the attack of 480-479 B.C., as were many other buildings in Attica. This was followed by a period of prosperity during the 5th century B.C., when the temple received its definite architectural form. Herodes Atticus took an interest in the sanctuary and he may well have repaired the big temple. This is followed by a period of decline ending in the dominance of the Christian religion. The first excavations in the area were carried out by the Dilettanti in 1813 and by D. Philios in 1880. This was followed by the excavations of V. Stais during the years 1890-1892 which exposed the temple, the fortress and many grave enclosures. A short exploration of the area was made by E. Mastrocostas in 1958. From 1975 to now, systematic excavation and research has been carried out by the Archaeological Society under the direction of V. Petrakos. The main monuments of the archaeological zone are as follows: The Sanctuary of Nemesis. The site of the temple was prepared with the construction of heavy isodomic retaining walls along the northern and eastern sides. Prior to this, there was a small temple of the early 6th century B.C., the existence of which is known only from the remaining Laconian roof tiles and the Doric poros temple that was destroyed by the Persians. These preceded the terrace, but they had already been destroyed when that was built during the 5th century B.C. The two temples visible today were constructed after this. The smaller temple was built at the beginning of the 5th century B.C., with polygonal wall construction. It measured 10 x 6 m. Within it were found a number of important statues. The larger temple was built after the middle of the 5th century B.C., to the north of the first temple and very close to it. It is a Doric peripteral building measuring 21,40 x 10,05 m., with 6 x 12 columns, pronaos and opisthodomos with two columns in antis. Earlier it was considered to be the work of the architect of the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, the so-called "Theseion" in the Athenian Agora and the Temple of Ares at Acharnai. At some places the work appears to be unfinished and neither metopes nor pediments were decorated. The famous statue of the goddess, a work of Pheidias’ student, Agorakritos, stood within the temple. It was made of Parian marble and the base - decorated in relief - of marble from Dionysos. The base has been reconstructed from the mass of fragments that were found scattered about. The scene shows the presentation of Helen to her mother Nemesis by Leda. It is dated around 420 B.C. Preserved to the north of the temple are the foundations of the altar, measuring 3,25 x 7,80 m. A stoa along the north side of the temenos with a little fountain in front of it, completes the sanctuary. The Fortress. It comprises an outer system 800 m. long and a smaller interior circuit enclosing the top of the hill. The main entrance of the outer system is at the south and it is protected by square towers at each side of the gate. Within the circuit private and public buildings have been found, notable among which are the theatre and the gymnasium. Within this same area is also the agora of the deme. Military establishments stood at the top of the hill - within the interior circuit of the fortification. On the coast below two small harbours - the eastern and the western - served the ships that patrolled the Euboian channel. The Fortress of Rhamnous, as that of Sounion at the southern tip of Attica, is thought to have been constructed during the Peloponnesian War in order to control the ships bringing grain to Athens. Road and Grave Monuments. Part of the ancient road leading to the deme of Rhamnous was found during the excavations. It passed in front of the sanctuary of Nemesis and ended at the fortress. Along the road were found many splendid grave enclosures of classical times with fine grave monuments in relief, funerary naiskoi and stelai. A considerable number of these enclosures have been restored. The Tymbos of Marathon is a vaulted tomb where the 192 Athenian soldiers who died in the Marathon Battle were buried. The burial monument, also known as the “Soros”, is the reminder of the epic victory of the Greek -majorly outnumbered- forces against the “unbeatable” Persians. The tomb is 9 meters tall and has a diameter of 50 meters. Right next to it, there is a statue of Miltiades who was the general of the army during the battle, and due to whose wit and strategic intelligence Greeks managed to triumph in 490 BC. Archaeological research brought to light evidence of the cremated bones, as well as traces of the funeral supper. The location of the burial is rather significant and underlines the outstanding case of Marathon Battle; although the tradition ordered that the fallen ones would be buried in their hometown, it was decided that the warriors of Marathon should be buried in the battlefield, as a remark of their exceptional bravery. The tumulus was a point of reference, and every year the young Athenians would visit the place to leave wreaths and make sacrifices to honor the gallant heroes. Although the renowned archeologist Heinrich Schliemann made systematic efforts to discover the burial tomb, the tumulus was discovered and excavated by Valerios Stais in 1891. Nowadays, those interested can visit the small park around the tomb and see up close the marble stele, erected as a reminder of this unique chapter of Greek history.

At the mountain of Amomon, as Mount Penteli used to be called, at the area of Nea Makri, is the Monastery of the Annunciation of Virgin Mary, a pilgrimage of thousands of believers from all over Greece. Its history is connected to the life and the death as a martyr of Agios Efraim, who came here at a young age to become a monk, but during a Turkish raid he was tortured and killed on the 5th of May 1426. In its interior there is a reliquary with the saint’s relics, while at the courtyard of the monastery there is a tree, where according to tradition, the saint was killed. The monastery celebrates on January 3rd and on May 5th. The complex is a stone structure with nice vegetation and makes for an easy and peaceful visit.

The existence of ancient ruins in the locality of Mikro Elos (Small Marsh) of Brexiza has been noted by early travelers, who also refer to the area as Nissi (island). In 1792 the French Consul in Athens, L.S. Fauvel, drew the ruins of the area, on an islet cut off from the land by a canal. The excavations have revealed the extensive complex of the Egyptian gods sanctuary and the luxurious bathhouse (balneum), as well as a large ellipsoidal cistern further to the south. Visitors can circulate in the archaeological site after works executed by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture with the financial support of the European Union (3rd Community Support Framework). The complex was founded by Herodes Atticus, around 160 AD. The great orator, sophist and benefactor hailed from Marathon and resided here, and the complex was possibly established within his estate. The sanctuary can be identified as “the sanctuary of Canopus” referred to by Herodes’ biographer Philostratos (2nd-3rd cent. AD). In founding it, Herodes imitated the Emperor Hadrian, who had built a Serapeion on an artificial islet at Tivoli, close to Rome, modeled on the Serapeion of the town of Canopus on the Nile Delta. Schinias Marathon National Park is located in Attica and in the plain of Marathon, in the homonymous area. It is about 40 km NE of Athens and is the most important coastal ecosystem of Attica, while it is also extremely interesting as a landscape and is based on a sensitive water balance. Its area is 13.84 square kilometers (including the sea area). It consists of the forest of Koukounaria, the Mega Elos, the Kinosura Peninsula, the coast and the sea zone. In the past, the wetland was part of the Kato Souli coastal communications station in the USA (in the area and until the beginning of the 90’s, the American Base N. Makris & Kato Souli operated). It is an important natural and economic resource of supra-local importance as every year it attracts thousands of visitors for the purpose of recreation (enjoyment of beaches, swimming, water sports in their vast majority), bird watching and landscape enjoyment. Historically, the site is a rememberance of the battlefield of Marathon, and specifically the camp of the Persians. Also, the Trophy of the Battle is very close. Administratively, it belongs to the Management Body of Schinias National Park. The Natural Environment Firstly, the area belongs to the Natura 2000 network with code number GR 3000003 with a total of 19 habitat types, 115 bird species with a potential diversity of 215 species while there are endangered species of freshwater fish, amphibians and reptiles. Moreover, in the area there are the following habitats (briefly): 1. Seaside forest with Aleppo pine (P.halepensis) and pine (P.pinea). It is one of the few left in Greece and the Mediterranean. 2. Kinosura Peninsula. A typical Mediterranean ecosystem, with shrubs, phrygana and grasses, the peninsula has maintained its naturalness with minimal human impact. 3. Blessed Source. Two lakes where water gushes all year round from the bottom, in significant quantities. Eels, sea turtles and the endangered endemic fish Pseudophoxinus stymphalicus marathonicus (daska) live. 4. Wetland with fresh, brackish and salt water, reedbeds, tamarisk trees, halophytic vegetation and wet meadows. However, the wetland floods periodically. A wide variety of endangered bird fauna is found, such as the species Ardea purpurea, Ardeola ralloides, Circus aeruginosus, Circus pygargus, Cisticola juncidis, Egretta garzetta, Ixobrychus minutus, Plegadis falcinellus. 5. Lake Stomi. The lower part of the wetland, at its eastern edge, seasonally floods with salt water. The rare orchid Orchis palustris and endangered aquatic birds such as Phoenicopterus ruber, Falco naumanni and Himantopus himantopus are found in the area. 6. Sea bay with submarine meadows of Posidonia (Posidonia oceanica).

Visit / Lessons / Workouts The Schinias Olympic Rowing Center was built in 2004 and hosted the Rowing and Canoe Sprint Competitions at the Olympic Games in Athens the same year. The entrance is free for the public as for walking and cycling. In order to use the rowing facilities you must be a club athlete with a license but you may also attend some training sessions in a official rowing club as an amateur athlete as well. The WLM team visited the rowing center to try out the sport of rowing and we were left with a very positive impression! The lessons | The workouts Classes and trainings take place every weekend in Schinias, when the appropriate weather conditions prevail. The first 4 courses (15 € / 1.5 hours) are individual courses where the goal is to learn the basic skills of rowing and familiarize yourself with the sport, the equipment and the environment. Then the teamwork starts (12 € / hour) where you now get on a boat (skiff) with other athletes. Obviously you have to be water friendly and have some basic swimming skills, although to date none of the WLMs have fallen into the water during rowing work out! The main coach is the Olympian Chryssa Biskitzi with 4 participations in the Olympics (Atlanta, Sydney, Athens and Beijing) but also a world and pan-European rowing champion. With the assistant coaches, Nikos Bistina and Panagiotis Bistina also champions in the sport of rowing, they compose a very beautiful coaching team. The training takes place on the weekends 9:00-14:00 & last 1.5 hours. The rowing trainings are aimed at all ages, regardless of gender! To book a session on a day and time that suits you, you can contact Chryssa Biskitzi directly at +306945580808 (viber also available). The Olympic Rowing Center in Schinias is located at the end of Schinias Avenue in the municipality of Marathon. It has free parking just outside the premises. Make sure you have water and a hat with you. Take the advantage of having an amazing experience during your holidays in Marathon! https://www.enoa.gr/

From Nea Makri going up to Penteli to Dionysos, in a spread between the slopes that are waiting patiently to refill pine trees as they used to, there is an organic farm, where everyone can rent their own piece of land, sow, cultivate and reap its fruits. In Farma Moo, apart from the field, there are happy animals that also enjoy the... good food, nature and care of the people who take care of them. Horses and donkeys, hens, roosters, lambs, goats, bunnies, peacocks, geese, ducks and ... guinea pigs, they are attractions for young and old who can feed and gaze at them for hours. Playground, swings and hammocks in the trees, digging for the younger children with shading (yes, that's the way it is!) have been set up next to the tavern with the mamadic food that is cooled by the mulberry trees and the big trees. In the area there are also games for younger children under pear trees and other fruit trees, events and children's parties are organized, but above all many family happy memories are hosted, as well as ours. The beach "Gabriel", at least that's how we call it here! Quiet, sandy, free beach which is essentially divided in two by a huge rock - you can go down with stairs on both sides though. Inside the sea there is sand and stones. It is almost never crowded but it always has a beautiful island breeze, as if you were on a desert island in the Aegean sea - a wild beauty! A beach for those who like landscapes and exploration!

This region is a well-known site, since it is the place where the famous battle of Marathon between the Greeks and the Persian army took place in 490 BC. The story says that after the bloody battle, a messenger named Pheidippides ran the 42 km that divided Marathon from Athens to announce the victory of the Greeks, and died from exhaustion right after spreading the news. This story is what started the marathon foot race in witch today runners follow the same Pheidippides route. At 8 km from the town of Marathon you will find the Lake Marathon, which is faced with a huge Pentelic marble dam (50m high and stretching for 300m), the same marble used to build the Parthenon. This lake used to be the unique water source of Athens until 1956. The beautiful ruins of the Doric Temple of Nemesis (435 BC), goddess of retribution as well as the 6th century small temple of Themis , goddess of justice and law, are located nearby. The Archaeological Museum of Marathonas will keep you into the archaeological mood. This interesting region also has some little rocky inlets with clean and nice water, very agreeable to visit, as well as the big and beautiful beach of Schinias.

The coastal city of Rafina is the second largest port of Attica after Piraeus with significant passenger traffic and ships to Cyclades and Euboea. The fact that it is connected with Attiki Odos and the recent infrastructure works made Rafina into a suburb of Athens. It has been inhabited since the Prehistoric Period, and was one of the 100 municipalities of ancient Attica. Nowadays it is a densely populated area with areas of green and beautiful beaches that attract a lot of visitors and create a particular liveliness during the summer months. The port of Rafina services tourists, cargoes and vehicles. It carries routes towards the Cyclades and Marmari of Euboea. Next to the port of Rafina is the Marina of Rafina. It has fifty docking spots and a repair unit. At a distance of 1,5 kilometer from Rafina the beach Marikes spreads its sand to the bay at a length of 700 meters. The impressive red rocks that embrace the beach of Kokkino Limanaki and come into the sea protect the beach from the summer winds

Driving | Rent a car

If you are planning on renting a car keep in mind that motorcycles won’t stay behind you when driving and tend to zigzag a lot, while other drivers may overtake you on the left or the right. Therefore, be vigilant and try to refrain from driving in the Greek capital, but on the islands or Marathon things are much better. To rent a car visit Vistakis Rent a Car or call +306944398408.

Be Taxi-Smart

Taxi fares in Greece are rather cheap, except for the airport rides. But in the city, you can find taxis virtually everywhere. Once you’ve flagged one down, the driver may ask you your destination first before deciding if it suits him or not. While this is unusual elsewhere, in Greece, it is common. Also, do not be surprised if the driver stops to take other people while you’re in it. Few drivers do it, but it may happen. And if it does, note that you will not share the fare with them. In Marathon to get a taxi though you should call +302294091300

The Cigarette in Greece

It is estimated that roughly 50 percent of Greeks smoke. While a ban on smoking indoors has been introduced, it is still very common to enter a café or restaurant where people smoke, although a lot of new places are enforcing the ban. But when it comes to outdoor smoking, it is allowed almost everywhere.

Do Not Flush Toilet Paper {please}

Do not throw paper in the toilet: this sign is omnipresent in Greek toilets. You are kindly requested to use the bin for this purpose. Why? Simple. Greek sewage pipes are 50 millimeters in diameter and easily get clogged if toilet paper is flushed. Don’t forget that Greece is an ancient civilization. And although sewage pipes are not that old, they just cannot support the quantity of flushed paper. And if you are worried about possible issues, the bins are emptied at the end of each day and usually have a lid.
