The natural entrance of the cave is vertically measuring 40 x 50 m and was created by the fall of a part of the roof. Artificial entrance with steps and a long underground corridor allows the visit to the cave. The lake is located 20 m. below the surface of the ground and the depth of its waters ranges from 10 m to 30 m. Stalactites with strange shapes adorn most of the cave. The waters of Melissani, according to George A., are poured into Agia Efimia

On Kefalonia island, there is a place that one should not miss visiting. This is one of the world's most astonishing geological phenomena for which there have been many discussions. Katavothres is not difficult to reach, as it takes only 3 kilometers from Argostoli long the Fanari road. The sea water rushes in through some cracks in the rocks on the shore and vanishes underground.
