The beautiful Gorge of Kato Zakros (or the gorge of the Dead) starts in a short distance from Ano Zakros, nearly 100km southeast of Agios Nikolaos church and ends at Kato Zakros beach. The beauty of the landscape, the historical importance of the gorge and its accessibility, attract many visitors every year. The trail in the gorge is part of the E4 European trail. It is an exceptionally beautiful gorge, with high walls with big caves on them. In those caves, tombs of the Minoan era, have been found, which contained findings of great archaeological value. Because of these tombs, the gorge is also called "Gorge of the Dead" and the caves "Caves of the Dead".

Sitia is the easternmost city on Crete and is located 64km east of Agios Nikolaos. The wider area of Sitia province hosts several small beaches where you can enjoy the sun and the sea. However, some who prefer to stay close to town, can visit the long city beach. The beach of Sitia is located east of the city and extends from the port to the area Petras on the east. Sitia beach is mainly sandy and has small pebbles in some places, while the water is shallow. It is very well organized with umbrellas, showers, lifeguard, beach / water sports, beach bars, but along its long shore you can find plenty of quiet places, especially on the east. Lastly, on the east side there is room for campervans and a few trees. East of the area of Petras, you can visit the ruins of an ancient city in Trypitos Cape, which is believed to be Itia, the birthplace of the Wise Myson. Moreover, in Petras archaeologists have identified remains from different periods of the Minoan era. West of the archaeological site of Trypitos, another small beach is formed, Karavopetra. Karavopetra means "Ship Stone", named after the boulder in the sea where the ships used to stop Πηγή: ⭐ Travel Guide for Island Crete ⛵, Greece❗ - Sitia beach cretanbeaches.com https://www.cretanbeaches.com/en/sea-tourism/east-crete-beaches-lassithi/sitia-beach

Toplou Monastery is located in the northeastern tip of Crete, at the base of Sidero Cape, 10km east of Sitia and 6km north of Palekastro. The monastery is one of the most historic monasteries of Crete and is known for its vast real property. In religious circles it is known as the Monastery of Panagia Akrotiriani, while the locals just call it the Great Monastery. The monastery is fortified with a 10m high wall, which protected it from enemy attacks. It spans a square area of 800 square meters and has three floors, with 40 rooms, a 33m high bell tower. According to the tradition, it has 100 doors, but only 99 of them have been found. In the center of the monastery, there is a well with water, which ensured the monks during the various sieges by the Turks and the pirates. Opposite the well there is a two-aisled basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary and John the Theologian.

Karoumes beach is located 110km east of Agios Nikolaos and 29km southeast of Sitia. It is formed at the exit of the beautiful gorge of Chochlakies which is part of the E4 trail. Access to the beach can be done only by walking in the gorge, since the rugged terrain of the area has kept off the roads. Thus, in order to come here you should leave your car in the picturesque village Chochlakies and follow the trail that starts 1km east of the village. The gorge is 3.5km long and has water till spring. The walk usually takes 1.5 hours (in very low tempo), but the canyon is inaccessible after rainfalls. The path along the river is breathtaking, as the gorge with its towering cliffs maneuvers through the bare mountains. In the route you meet several ponds (in spring) and a huge variety of plants. Near the exit, the high surrounding walls turn to a little valley. At the edge of the valley you will find the beautiful beach of Karoumes. The beach has small pebbles and the water is always calm, since it has eastern orientation. Also, there are many trees offering shade and some rocks on the north side of the beach. The beach is ideal for seclusion because of its distance from the urban centers and the difficult access. If you want to stay more isolated (more?), there are two tiny secret beaches with a length of only 3-5m located 300m and 400m south of the main beach.

Kouremenos is located 91km east of Agios Nikolaos and 21km east of Sitia, just 1km east of the small town Palekastro. In Palekastro there are more choices for accommodation, food and entertainment, but you will also find several new hotels near the beach. The beach is the longest in the area with a length exceeding 1.5km, bounded on the north by the Cape Tenta and on the south by the Cape Plaka. It has fine brown sand, shallow turquoise waters and several tamarisk trees around. It slightly organized in some areas with umbrellas, showers and beach bars. The beach is beautiful but the main feature of Kouremenos is elsewhere: the wind. Indeed, the wind here is so strong that the area is popular to windsurfers and kite surfers across Europe. Indeed it is no coincidence that the area hosts some of the largest wind turbine park in Greece, exploiting the huge wind potential HIONA BEACH!! Hiona beach is located next to Kouremenos beach. Here you can have a perfect day, especially if you combine your visit in Chiona with eating at the famous local fish taverns. The beach is slightly organised (near the taverns) but there are some tamarisk trees along the coast, offering shade. East of the main beach, there are several small coves, where you can find a quiet place to swim alone and nude. The first sandy beach is called Bondalaki and is an amazing beach.
