Sightseeing

A spectacular day activity is The Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park. There are many entrances to the trail and one is right down the street from the house on New Paltz rd. The walkway was once the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railway Bridge (named after the two small cities it connected). More than 40,000 supporters celebrated its opening on October 3, 2009. Free to walkers, hikers, runners, bikers, roller skaters, and those with wheelchairs and baby strollers, the park does not allow skateboards or motorized vehicles with the exception of scooters for the handicapped. Public restrooms are conveniently located on both sides of the bridge. “The bridge deck stands 212 feet above the river's surface and is 6,678 feet (1.28 miles) long, making it the longest, elevated pedestrian bridge in the world,” says the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Whatever the season, visitors should prepare to see water, sky, and land meeting as white boats speckle the landscape below.
