The history of the Centocelle district - La storia del Quartiere Centocelle
ENG: The name of the CENTOCELLE District derives from Centum Cellae, a military city built by Emperor Constantine I where one hundred of the best knights of the imperial guard, the Equites Singulares Augusti and their horses, found accommodation.
Centocelle became famous thanks to its homonymous airport during 1909, one of the Wright brothers, Wilbur, went to give a series of demonstrations of their Flyer: the first motor aircraft heavier than air that has ever flown. At the time it was just a simple airfield, later it became an important landing space for air travel until 1943,
but gradually the urbanization of the entire area made the airport unusable to make room for houses and a more livable complex. The cottages and tram railways gave the working class, such as artisans, small traders and peasants the chance to live here fully and start anew after the Second World War.
The streets of Centocelle tell thousands of stories and walking through them is a unique experience. You won't find statues or alleyways like in the center, but you will have the chance to live and experience the authentic Roman lifestyle firsthand.
The remains of the Alessandrino aqueduct that emerge majestically around the corner, a colorful and lively environment make this neighborhood a must when you are in Rome.
