DO NOT GO TO GRIMALDI'S FOR PIZZA. We are true NYC pizza snobs, and this is our list of authentic pizza places in the city: coal-fired, brick oven style; deck style; and square Sicilian style pie.
DO NOT go to Grimaldi’s. The founding family sold the name to a franchise years ago, and reopened as Juliana’s in the original location next door. (In other words, Juliana’s is the real Grimaldi’s.) You will still see Patsy Grimaldi sitting in the corner booth here in the afternoons.

A classic pie place and one of the last coal-fired brick oven pizzerias. Open since 1929, this is the place we visit first after long trips away.

Opened by a relative of the Lombardi family in the 1920s, Totonno’s is definitely serving a better pie than its originator. Coal-fired pies here are feathery and thin, Neapolitan style. Wine is served like you’re on an airplane: single serve in twist-cap plastic bottles.

Every time I think I’m over Roberta's, I visit one more time and I am completely blown away by the food here. It’s worth the trip, though don't be put off by the hipster clientele. (A waitress once worked her entire shift here naked as a performance art project.)

Go before they open and wait in line, otherwise you will wait for hours. Lucali is outrageously good and the owner is a local legend. He rolls his crusts with a wine bottle, and once survived a mafia-style stabbing on the street near the restaurant.

Paulie Gee was a disciple of Roberta’s that opened his own pizza place as a retirement project. If you’re lucky, he’ll stop by your table and share a glass of his homemade limoncello. The wait can be long, so visit his slice place down Franklin Street if you're in a hurry.
