Food scene

Sure, Chipotle is good every time, but the small business owners who run independent restaurants & bars in the Twin Beaches and Dunkirk areas truely bring thier A-Game to their customers. Many of these novel and unique menu items are simply the current iteration of a local family's take on some well known regionally-affiliated dish or recipes. Only their version had the benefit of being perfected over multiple lifetimes by those who were passed down the recipes. You can't get that at Popeye's Chicken or Taco Bell! Eat local if you can, you will not regret it.

Now called The Bakist** "A successful small independent coffee shop! What's not to love? They have a standard fare of coffee and cappuccino based beverages, inside seating, outdoor seating if it's nice, and yummy pastries. If you're a fan of breakfast foods, like I am, try to get there before 12:00 noon. They have a half a small but super delicious breakfast sandwich menu, and always good keeche.... It's that how to spell that?. Anyway, the breakfast sandwich I LOVE is not explicitly listed on the menu, so just say this: Egg Tomatoe Spinach Mozzarella Cheese Sausage On a delicious croissant I love it"

The Chesapeake Market & Deli is a local favorite with three locations, two which are nearby. They are moderately priced, with some meals on their menu likely to ratchet up the bill. BUT, it's all worth it, I have yet to be disappointed by anything I've eaten there. Some of our favorite dishes include their Maryland Style Crab Cakes, Old Bay Wings, Tossed Caprese Salad, and Lobster or Crab Mac n Cheese. And do yourself a favor and get a bowl of the Maryland Crab Soup, which is a staple in the lives of many residents in this area! The closest location is listed as being in North Beach, but it's actually in the little resort and marina town of Rose Haven, which is a short 7-8 minute drive up the road. This location has a small market which is 1 part convenience store and 1 part tourist trinket shop. The other area location in in Dunkirk, MD. So if you find yourself having to go to Walmart or a supermarket in Dunkirk, it's an easy stop and you won't regret it! For navigating to either location, Google Maps is your friend!

Things to Do

The beach at North Beach is one of the biggest on the Chesapeake Bay. The town charges an entrance fee and limits the number people on the beach: 400 out of towners and 400 residents. And to make room for people, they limit coolers and other carry-alongs. That may seem like a lot of people, but this beach is several blocks long and has several sections. The upside about North Beach during the summer is that it caters to families with a beach playground and beach toy rentals. Bonus: there’s a swimming section that’s netted to keep jellyfish out. There are no life guards. No pets are allowed on the beach, nor is grilling allowed. The beach and boardwalk are seven blocks long. The boardwalk is popular with walkers in the morning and evening. A bike lane next to the boardwalk keeps walkers separated from cyclists. A fishing pier separates the beach into north and south sections. You need a wrist-band to show you’ve paid to be able to entire the pier or the beach sections during season and regulated times. At the pier entrance is a shop for renting umbrellas, chairs and floats. The North Beach Public Beach Welcome Center also offers rentals for Beach Umbrellas, Kayaks, Paddle Boards, Bicycles, and Inner Tubes for beach-goers to enjoy. The beach is open from 8am to 8pm. There are bathrooms at the Welcome Center. The North Beach waterfront faces east. If you’re a morning person you’ll love the sunrises. But here’s an interesting thing about the Chesapeake Bay — if there are any clouds, the sunset reflects off those clouds and can give you a beautiful sunset facing east.

Great drinks and a good selection of beers, nice atmosphere, and fun live music! The crowd on Saturday was vocal, encouraging, and friendly. No kitchen BUT they do have food options available that you can enjoy at the Wheel. There are currently QR code menus available that are linked to two local restaurants, plus they have a food runner that will bring the hot food straight to your table. The massive cliffs, from which Calvert Cliffs State Park was named, dominate the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay for roughly 24 miles in Calvert County. They were formed over 10 to 20 million years ago when all of Southern Maryland was covered by a warm, shallow sea. When the sea receded the cliffs were exposed and began eroding. Today these cliffs reveal the remains of prehistoric species, including sharks, whales, rays and seabirds that were the size of small airplanes. Calvert Cliffs State Park is a day-use park featuring a sandy beach, unique fossils, an accessible recycled tire playground, fishing, a freshwater and tidal marshland and 13 miles of hiking trails. Day use service charge is $5/vehicle ($2 additional for out-of-state residents)

This is such a cute little park! There is a pond with koi fish and goldfish. There are walking paths that wind throughout the park with a couple of cute bridges. What really makes this park unique is the fact that it has so much local art. A few of the sculptures are permanent, but a number of them are planned to be rotated over time. My favorite sculptures were the ones made out of driftwood - they are both beach-y and very neat to look at. It's a nice place to stop by if you're visiting the area, and it it right off of the North Beach boardwalk.

City/town information

Sometimes you just need that Taco Bell, or Mod Pizza, or Walmart, or Giant Supermarket fix, at 10:30 PM just because. We all want the warm experience of offering our patronage to the independent mom and pop shops, but the truth is that they are simply ill equipped to satisfy those acute needs. For those occasions you'll want to head about 7 miles up the road to the town of Dunkirk, MD. That's where the Starbucks, Game Stop, and other national franchised food, drink, and discount stores are located for use. It's about a 10 minute drive and an easy drive, but be careful. If you are routed asking the most likely road, Mt. Harmony Road, there will be exactly 2 school zones which mandate a 25MPH speed whilst driving through. Be warned, the Calvert County Sheriff Office have one automatic speed trap flasher device between the two zones. They seem to take joy in moving the device back and forth, offering no warning or indication, at varying and random durations, and regardless of whether the schools were empty during Summer months, or not. Make sure you heed those signs so you can stay outta trouble with Johnny Law! Either way, as seems to be the universal truth with all that places in this Guidebook, Google Maps will be your friend who can help most.

North Beach has a famous sister-town who lives right next door called Chesapeake Beach. Like all good sisters, they look similar in some ways but the two towns offer vastly different personalities. Chesapeake Beach has a very interesting history going back to the late 1800's, and turned into a resort town in the early 20th Century complete with a dedicated train service providing service from Washington DC. Called "Little Nevada" by those who visited to escape DC, there was a very large boardwalk and huge wooden roller-coaster which was later destroyed by a hurricane. There is still a large resort operating in town, but the the carnival attractions were removed long ago. If you're looking to find a fishing trip into the Bay, this is where you should look! Also they have a small independent grocery store and pharmacy if you need either. If you are interested in the history, look for the museum also listed in this Guidebook. If you want a bit more of a nightlife, just 1 mile south at Chesapeake Beach is where you can find pubs, a casino, and live entertainment.

North Beach is like an ocean beach town plunked down on the Chesapeake Bay. It’s a way to hit the shore from Washington, DC or Baltimore without dealing with bay bridge traffic. The town has a big, sandy beach with a boardwalk and even a pink, high-rise condo. You’ll also find the typical beach shops. But North Beach is so small there aren’t many of them. There are two separate towns that together form the full beachfront experience: North Beach and Chesapeake Beach. These were Victorian resort towns that lost the ships and trains that imported city-dwellers, and downsized to modern beach towns. North Beach has the beach. Chesapeake Beach does not have a public beach, instead it has the other beachy stuff-to-do, such as a waterpark and a selection of lively restaurants and bars. North Beach revolves around the big beach during the summer. Nearly everything is within walking or cycling distance. There is small business district on the road that goes past the beach, to the north. There’s a couple small markets, alongside beach shops, a large antique store and several restaurants. You won’t find a typical downtown. City hall is away from the beach on the main road through North Beach, Chesapeake Avenue. The normally sleepy town fills up during major summer and festival weekends. They have summer concerts; movies on the beach; annual wine, spririts and craft beer festival and many more special events. Check out the town’s events page for dates and times for major events planned throughout the year.
