Hui is the best Chinese + Japanese takeaway in Edinburgh, despite looking very unassuming and being pretty cheap. They do great sushi (mmm Dragon Roll...), but you can mix and match Chinese and Japanese cuisine when you order!

Wonderful traditional Catalan food, reasonably priced (for Edinburgh), great atmosphere and decoration (roses grogues), will definitely be coming back here regularly! There are very few places in Edinburgh where Catalan food is served, and most are mixed or confused with other cuisines. Here at Casa Mara, you can experience the true diet of families born and raised in and around Barcelona. My only note of caution/feedback would be for vegetarians / vegans, there are very few options - generally Catalan cuisine is centred around meat and seafood.

We've been to many places for burritos in Edinburgh over the last 6 years, but Jack's continues to be by far the best quality, freshest, tastiest food. If the thing you care about the most is eating the best burrito, go here. Half and half Chicken + Haggis is so good!

Hamiltons is great! Food is always great and staff do a great job even when they're packed - we came on new year's day and had a wonderful experience; they were total troopers for being open at all!

Coro is amazing - one of my favourite places in Edinburgh, a must for chocolate lovers! They make glorious crepes and waffles, but my favourite item is the fruit fondue, - I always have to ask for extra melted chocolate though, it's just so good!

Parks & Nature

Walking along the Water of Leith from our home to Dean Village is relaxing, stunningly beautiful, and filled with wildlife. If you want to visit a capital city, but also enjoy peace & quiet or birdwatching, you can easily spend anywhere from 10 minutes to 3 hours walking along the pathway through varied parts of Edinburgh, and not even realise you're in the center of a bustling city!

Arts & Culture

There's something for everyone here, covering the natural world, world cultures, science and technology, art, design and fashion, and Scottish history, all under one roof. Plus, it's free! The space itself is beautiful too, so it can be nice to spend time here even if you don't look at any of the exhibitions.

Only a 15 minute walk along the beautiful Water of Leith Walkway beside our flat, the National Gallery of Modern Art is a must for any modern art fan in the city. Modern One hosts the gallery's permanent collection, Modern Two has ever-changing exhibitions and displays, and an expansive park full of fascinating sculptures. At night, the front of the main gallery building lights up a large neon sign saying "Everything is going to be alright", which brings a special sentimental value to me as something which has brought me surprising comfort in tough times over the years.

Sightseeing

Arthur's Seat / Salisbury Crags is an iconic part of Edinburgh - how many cities have a hill so close to the center?! You get the best views of Edinburgh from up here, and it's only a 30 minute bus (to the bottom!) from our home.

Situated at the top of the Royal Mile on top of Castle Rock, Edinburgh Castle is the number one visitor attraction in Scotland and the most iconic building in the city. Perched on top of an extinct volcano, the Castle and its Esplanade offers unparalleled views of Edinburgh. Once inside you can explore some of the oldest and most important buildings of the city, including St Margaret's Chapel, The National War Memorial and the Half Moon Battery. The regal Crown Square is a real highlight, where you will find the magnificent Grand Hall and Scotland's Crown Jewels - including the famous Stone of Destiny.

This is our local supermarket. It's big enough to stock most items you need for day-to-day living, but if you need something less common, the much larger 24/7 Tesco in Corstorphine is a 20 minute bus away.

Drinks & Nightlife

We love karaoke so much! We regularly come here; Supercube is by far the best place to go if you love singing. You book a private room to yourself (with whatever group of people you bring along - we usually go just as a couple, but we've also come here with groups of up to 10 friends!), then sing nonstop for as long as you've booked the room for! We usually go Monday-Wednesday as they have a "3 hours for the price of 2" deal on then.

This is "just" a Wetherspoons pub (very common pub franchise in the UK), but if you've never been to one before and you're looking for somewhere for a drink with a friend or two, it's a solid choice. It's unexpectedly grandiose inside as it used to be a concert venue, it's very large so you'll usually find somewhere to sit, and the drinks are cheaper than anywhere else in Edinburgh.

It's cheap, dirty, cheesy, but everyone ends up there anyway. Every night of the year, this club is open and filled with plebs having a good time. It's not classy, but it has a "dance music" room and a "cheesy pop" room and £1 drinks - what else is there to say?

This is our local pub - nothing particularly special, but it's been there since 1880 (with some original fixtures still remaining!), there's a nice atmosphere (it's not a "dirty old man" pub), and they do karaoke nights on the last Friday of the month! Steer clear when there's a game on at Murrayfield Stadium though, it gets crazy with fans.

Getting Around

This is our local Lothian Buses bus stop (named "Roseburn Gardens"), where you can get services 12, 26, and 31 into town. The nearest Tram Stop (Murrayfield) is a 10 minute walk, which can also be used to get into the city center. Both Lothian Buses and Trams charge £1.70 for single tickets, or £4 for a day ticket offering unlimited travel all day. The buses only take exact change though, so make sure you carry coins. Travel to/from the town center (e.g. Princes Street) can be either 9 minutes by bus (service 12/26), 18 minutes by walk+tram, or 30 minutes walking.
