Enjoying Maitland and Surrounds

Sightseeing

This is a lovely space for some outdoor time. Picnic tables and a children's playground with many lawns and a miniature railroad for rides. The lake has an easy walking path round it that is approximately 3km. Birds, ducks, turtles and wallabies are all in the surrounds waiting to be discovered. Plenty of parking and public toilets available.

This is a great example of a regional art gallery. Frequently changing displays, excellent restaurant (indoor and outdoor seating), engaging gift shop and art lessons for children. I love it. I'm a member and go often. Highly recommended.

If you are here to explore Hunter Valley vineyards, you've come to the right place. About 20 minutes away by car is Pokolbin, the heart of the Hunter Valley wine making area. Many well known winemaking vineyards are represented with tasting rooms and most also have restaurants. There are also a lot of smaller, experimental vineyards for the more adventurous. My personal favourite is Tyrells (end of Broke Road) but it's hard to find a bad one. The standard of food, wine and service is very high in the Hunter Valley. Explore and enjoy!

Food scene

The Lovedale winery is located about 20 minutes of Maitland but it is the Smokehouse Cafe that separates this vineyard from others. their food is tasty, well priced and innovative. I take all my friends here on their visits.

Clubs are a big part of Australian life and this is a particularly good one. With a recent renovation, they have bright new facilities and an decent indoor playground for the kids. An extensive food menu will suit most tastes and they have all the requisite gaming, sporting and bar facilities. This is a regular spot for our family when dining out.

City/town information

If you haven't been to Newcastle recently, you might be shocked by the change. No longer a steel town, it has been transformed into a cosmopolitan regional city with hundreds of bistros, craft breweries and open air walks along the waterfront. Darby Street is the centre of this scene and it's worth a visit.

Morpeth is a great example of a small town hanging on to it's identity. Morpeth has retained its architecture and small, crafty shops to lend an air of a graceful lady aging beautifully. It's very pretty and worth stopping for a lunch or afternoon tea and a walk around. Many launch their kayaks on the river bank there for a leisurely paddle on the river.

Rutherford is not an historic suburb, but it has everything that opens and shuts. A series of malls include supermarkets, gyms, bottle shops, bakeries, pharmacies and everything else you may need. Further up the highway, there are the big box shops including Harvey Norman, Spotlight, Sheridan, Fantastic Furniture and more. If you need something, it will be here. If it isn't, just 15 minutes away is Green Hills Shopping Mall, a multistory shopping mall of hundreds of large and small specialty shops. Rutherford also caterers to all sorts of fast food tastes from McDonalds, KFC, Pizza and Subway to Chinese and Thai takeaway. Menulog and Uber Eats also operate here.

Maitland is one of the oldest regional centres in NSW. Built on the rich coal fields of the Hunter Valley it has been a commercial centre for about 150 years. The main shopping area is referred to as "The Levee" so named because it keeps back the Hunter River when in flood. I love the architecture in Maitland and much of it has been retained. A walk along the river after a light meal in one of the local restaurants is a pleasant way to spend a bright afternoon in the sun. Even now, Maitland is a surprising mix of urban and rural with horses grazing opposite shopping areas. Once through beautiful Lorn, you are almost immediately in farm land and horse country. You will find most of what you need in the main street of Maitland with variety shops, Op shops, book stores and cafes. There is even a multiplex cinema just behind the main street. The recent COVID shutdowns did impact on the Maitland CBD with many shops having to close. But there are signs of recovery as we stir again from our homes and re-ignite the local economy.

Neighbourhoods

Telarah is an older suburb nestled between Maitland town centre and the suburbs of Rutherford. Telarah was the home of the steam trains of South Maitland Railway and some older wagons and bogeys can still be seen near the old worksheds. Telarah has a small but vital set of shops with everything you need from an IGA supermarket, a Cellarbrations grog shop, Pharmacy, Takeaway food place and Devotion to Hair. Around the corner is a newsagent and post office and a little further on is the local Bunnings Hardware centre. Between Capper street and the shops is the Telarah Bowling Club which is open 7 days a week for lunch, dinner and occasionally, live entertainment. They often have events that may be of interest such as ballroom danding, square dancing or line dancing socials. They are a lot of fun.
