Entertainment

Welcome to one of “America’s 10 Best Downtowns” (Forbes). Amidst the skyscrapers and fantastic Art Deco buildings, you’ll find a vibrant, new energy in the heart of the city. Downtown Kansas City is the central business district of Kansas City, Missouri and the Kansas City metropolitan area. See the new KC for yourself inside the Power & Light District (or “P&L” as locals call it), an eight-block entertainment hub chock-full of more than 50 bars, restaurants and shops. KC Live!—the district’s covered outdoor courtyard—hosts more than 130 free events each year. Across the street is one of the country’s busiest arenas, the glittering T-Mobile Center. Theater is well represented here too, as shown by the many marquees lighting up the night. Take your movie-watching to the next level at Alamo Drafthouse, a modern cinema with a refreshing, ironclad no-talking/no-texting policy, plus cool features like quote-along shows and in-theatre pyrotechnics. Test your skills at The College Basketball Experience, a hands-on hoops haven, or uncover the “Titanic of the Missouri River” at the Arabia Steamboat Museum, a tribute to the 1856 shipwreck. End the night by taking in KC’s signature sound at downtown jazz venues such as The Phoenix.

Food scene

You haven't had BBQ until you taste KC's Best, Gates BBQ. The Gates saga began in 1946 when George W. Gates decided that a family-owned and operated restaurant would be more enticing than life with the railroad. He pooled his resources and opened “Gates Ol’ Kentucky” at 19th and Vine which was the first of the now thriving restaurant chain known today as “Gates Bar-B-Q.” During 1949, as the population began to shift, a move was made to 23rd and Charlotte – however a dream to open a bar in conjunction with the restaurant drew him back to 19th & vine in 1951. This dream was shortlived – a major fire occurred in 1951, forcing him to move the business to 24th & Brooklyn and remain there until 1957.
