Sequoia National Park was the first park created to protect a living organism. Sequoias are the oldest and largest living thing. Found only in the unique environment of the western Sierra, the massive sequoia trees grow at between 5,000 and 8,000 feet in elevation. The relatively mild winters at that elevation, along with a traditional history of fire, has made the mid-Sierra zone the perfect habitat for sequoias. To protect the giant sequoias from logging, Sequoia National Park was established in 1890. Be sure to stop in Three Rivers on your way up and check out Reimer's Candy and Gifts - they have delicious ice cream.

Central Coast

Paso Robles (originally El Paso de Robles) is Spanish for “The Pass of the Oaks”. The area is located about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco in the wine region known as the "Central Coast". Called "Paso" by California locals, the city sits on the eastern side of the Santa Lucia Coastal Mountain Range, with elevations from 675 to 1,100 feet. The actual Paso Robles AVA (American Viticultural Area) has over 26,000 acres planted with over 40 wine grape varieties. It has quickly become one of the most exciting wine regions in California.

Pismo is a fun area with many outside activities for both children and adults. Known for being a very clean beach town - it is great for walking, watching the surfers, laying on the beach, enjoying a sunset and so much more. Plenty of tourist-like shops and restaurants around the beach area.

Cambria is a seaside village in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles along California State Route 1 (Highway 1). The charming town of Cambria is full of opportunities for the little experiences that make a meaningful impact on our lives. Spend some time on the Central Coast and enjoy every minute as you visit local favorites and discover hidden gems. Famous for its dramatic coastline and breathtaking views, the 1-mile-long Moonstone Beach Boardwalk is where your seaside escape begins. Whether you want to sink your toes into the sand, catch glimpses of marine life, or simply relax and watch the sunset, you will find there is something for everyone. Be sure to also check out Hearst Castle (also mentioned in our guidebook), and the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery! October-May is the birthing season and the best time to view the elephant seals in action, but they haul out on the beaches year-round.
