Food scene

There is a little ice cream shop across from the city center square in Puerto Plata. They serve pastries, assorted snacks, ice creams, gelato, and assorted beverages. We have been there several times over the past years and our visit has never been a disappointment. It's a nice refreshing treat when you take a tour of the city center.

Sosua Beach, Great spot to hang out, and the Mofongo is king here. The beach and seafood. A family-run eatery at the entrance to Playa de Sosua. A great place to have a bite, a drink and spend some time with friends soaking up the Caribbean energy. Also the perfect people-watching location. Payment Advice: Bring cash and more specifically Pesos, otherwise you will end up paying more if they convert the final price to USD or EUR. Credit Card machine is always unpredictable and doesn't work most of the time we went there, also not to mention that they will add a local 18% taxes if paying with card. Paying cash normally reduce those taxes to 10% or less so good money-saving while enjoying this delicious experience

Cash is King

Like the old saying goes "Cash is King", cash will take you far on multiple occasions so do the following: - Bring enough USD or EUR cash as you will be able to exchange currency at the airport, next to SuperPola market, Cabarete area, and others - Do not exchange all USD/EUR at once as many times international currency is needed for services. Also, it is super limited for the banks to get USD cash using Debit Card - There are plenty ATMs that would let you get Dominican Pesos using International Debit Card (fee applicable). The preferred location is the one right next to SuperPola.

Which Beach to Go?

- Avoid Sosua Beach during weekends, locals travel from far to enjoy the beach as well and it will get crowded. - Cabarete beach is perfect for groups and adventurers, not truly for families with little kids. It is noisy, lot of alcoholic beverages and aggressive local sellers walking in the sand - Best Beach for Families is Sosua Beach, during weekdays, and the prime spot for relaxing is Alicia Beach - Alicia Beach is a super-low profile spot to enjoy family time, however the local offering there is very limited around tours, place where to eat, and water entertainment.
