Neighbourhoods

This place is the reason I moved to the air. Seeped in history… amble down here any time of the day and enjoy the quaint shops, delicious food offerings and historic architecture. History of the area: Bermondsey Street has a rich and varied history that can be traced back as far as 1000 years ago, when people built a causeway across the marshes from the south end of London Bridge to Bermondsey Abbey (now Bermondsey Square). Over time, buildings were put up along the street and by about 1700, it was a wealthy area, trading in wool. By 1850 if was famous for its tanneries and leatherworking. Many of its historic buildings and yards stretch back from the street in the medieval pattern. In the 1970s, the tanneries had moved out and the antique dealers moved in and filled the industrial spaces with antique furniture. Our famous antiques market can still be experienced every Friday morning on Bermondsey Square. In 1973 it was designated a conservation area.

Bustling and undeniably fun— Borough Market is quintessential London! Grab some oysters and fizz, some wine or beer from one of the open wine shops and walk around sampling the cheese from the UK’s finest cheese mongers. You can find some really exciting food products here from exotic foods to the best olive oil, and you can also find an array of excellent little restaurants and some hole in the wall pubs too. Here’s some insider tips from the culture trip - I tend to just go where the people are: https://theculturetrip.com/europe/united-kingdom/england/london/articles/the-complete-guide-to-borough-market/

A 25 minute walk away tucked just under Tower Bridge, the cobbled streets of Shad Thames are unique and calm and honestly one of my favourite parts of London. History: During the Victorian era, Shad Thames was one of London's most important industrial hubs as it was home to the largest warehouse complex in London. The tea, coffee, dried fruit and spice warehouses of Butler's Wharf were completed in 1873. For this reason, the area became known as the 'larder of London'. You can still see the overhead gantries which connected the warehouses today, adding to the historic atmosphere of the area. During the 20th Century, Shad Thames' warehouses were forced to close as goods had to be unloaded further east due to congestion and containerization. The final warehouse closed its doors in 1972. Nevertheless, it was cheap to live in the area, making it popular with artists. Famous residents of Shad Thames in the 70s were artists David Hockney and Derek Jarman. The area was redeveloped in the mid-80s and 90s. The disused warehouses alongside the river were converted into flats, offices, shops, cafes bars and restaurants. In fact, some of the best-known restaurants such as Butler's Wharf Chop House and Le Pont de la Tour were opened by designer/restaurateur Terence Conran during the period of regeneration.

Want a killer view across London? Well then you have to visit the Shard! Admittedly the place is fancy… but I know a way that you can visit it affordably (see inside this guide).

Bermondsey is also famous for its Square Mile — that is its 25+ microbreweries. You can spend a very fun day visiting them one by one —- see the guide here: https://secretldn.com/bermondsey-beer-mile-guide/

Multicultural and alive in every single way — the Monopoly famous Old Kent Road can seem a million miles away from the other pockets of Bermondsey I have directed you too but it makes for a really enjoyable stroll up and down. What I love about it is that almost every culture is represented here; there are a tonne of different cuisine restaurants and you really see the different communities gather in these places. Very working class, the Old Kent Road is the most affordable pocket of Central London — and if you step down it, you can get a glimpse of a completely different part of London.

Food scene

The best street food area in London, in my opinion! Always so much fun, shop with your nose down this street — all cuisines are up for grabs.

This buzzy and very popular neighbourhood restaurant serves up well priced pasta dishes and more and is just a 10 minute walk away. Pop in between 5-6 for £6 cocktails, but make sure to either be there between 1730-1800 to get your name on the door, or download the Dojo app to join the queue virtually - as this place is VERY popular!

This gorgeous little coffee shop and wine bar serves up a great offering of drinks, coffees/hot chocolates as well as some nibbles. The ambience is always excellent and it's run by some lovely people.

This cosy deli serves up delicious charcuterie, salads, sandwiches, cakes as well as a great drinks list. In fact, this place was my first impression of Bermondsey and clearly -- it enticed me to come back! Sitting in here is always a treat.

Sightseeing

One of my favourite things to do is walk along the river - or jog! - all the way along until this glorious historical pub (35 mins)- it really is a gem. The pub marks the literal place where the Mayflower left London in 1820 and headed all the way to the USA with the first Pilgrims. I suggest walking up Bermondsey Street to Tower Bridge where you can start the river walk.
