Breweries

This small brewery delivers on great beer and authentic Stockton charm. It’s a local favorite with good reason, and you can drink on their patio or get “crowlers” (large canned beers) Togo. It’s an easy walk or a 3 minute drive from the farm, and located right in the center of downtown Stockton. Their hours are limited to Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, but they’re a must if you like beer and are trying to enjoy the local experience.

This spot is (if I’m not mistaken) the 3rd closest brewery to the airbnbs/farm. Located in Flemington, the drive is just around 20 minutes and is full of bucolic views and winding roads. Lone Eagle is open all days of the week (except for Mondays) until 10pm (except for Sundays). It’s a great place to grab a pint or pick up a 4 pack, crowler, or growler to go. It’s a larger brewery then Stockton’s Odd Bird Brewing Co., but still maintains the intimate/local vibe while providing a larger beer selection.

Just a 15 minute drive down river on the Pennsylvania side is Triumph Brewing Company. Triumph is located right by the New Hope canal path and train station, and is a great place to grab a pint, bite to eat, or shoot pool with friends. Triumph is larger then the other breweries on my list and has a second location in Princeton. Another way it’s different than the other breweries on my list is they occasionally have bands, and have a full dinner and lunch menu. Triumph has an outdoor seating area that is dog friendly and an extensive and rotating beer list.

With a near cult following this togo beer joint is undeniably one of the best in NJ. It’s around a 25 minute drive to Troon Brewery in the small historic town of Hopewell NJ. Troon is located on a charming farm that also houses the sourland mountain spirits (a distillery named appropriately for its close proximity to the sourland “mountain” preserve). Their beer sells out insanely fast and is hard to get. The best way to get it is to follow their social media page @troonbrewing and message them directly.

Located just a mile upriver from the farm, Bull’s Island is an excellent spot to experience the Delaware River, with an iconic walking bridge spanning the river and 2 boat launches, one for canoes another for larger boats. Bulls Island is a great picnic destination or spot to float down river towards New Hope.

The Lambertville wingdam is an incredible place easily accessible by the NJ towpath, after a 12 minute drive to Lambertville. It’s slightly off the beaten path but a local favorite location and a great destination when the water level isn’t too high. Walk out on the wingdam and enjoy an intimate view of the Delaware, go fishing or read a book. Walk out at your own risk however, as when the water level is high after rain it can be dangerous! When the river flows over the wingdam the rapids in between the NJ and PA arms can reach up to class 3 rapids. A good rule of thumb is, if you can’t see the wingdam because the water is flowing over, don’t walk out there! On nice days enjoy the views but do not go swimming in the center of the wingdam! It is however a popular destination for experienced kayakers who want to do easily accessible rapids runs—but kayakers be sure to wear a life jacket and helmet, and as always respect the river!

Ringing Rocks is a destination spot for travelers from all around the country and is conveniently only a 25 minute drive up river on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware river. What makes it famous is the natural phenomenon of its rocks that ring like a bell when struck with a hammer. While the ringing rock fields are the main attraction for most, I personally get more of a kick from the stream side hiking and small waterfalls. Fair warning, it’s more tricky to produce the desired effect when striking the rocks than the name of the park and it’s reputation might suggest.

Bowman’s tower is a classic New Hope scenic view destination, boasting a 14 mile view while being only 8.6 miles down river from the farm/airbnbs. Bowman’s tower is located just out of town from New Hope and is around a 20 minute drive from the airbnbs. Bowman’s Tower is also located right by a Wildflower preserve, all-in-all, it is an excellent spot to picnic, take a hike or catch a view that really encompasses what the area is all about and has to offer.

Located a half hour’s drive down river from the farm is Washington Crossing state park. Its a decent but not spectacular spot to have lunch, but is rich in historical significance and is a surprisingly large park. It’s also a great destination when biking down the canal path, or canoeing down river. It’s located right across the river from Washington’s Crossing, PA (which has its own park that really should be considered the second half of this park, divided by the Delaware river). As the name might suggest, this is where George Washington famously crossed the Delaware River. The park, particularly on PA side is a good place to kick around a soccer ball or toss a frisbee.

Food scene

The Stockton Market is the premier place to grab lunch in town. The Market is located less then 5 minutes from the farm/airbnbs and in the heart of Stockton. It has just about everything you could ask for from a small town, a great deli (the Borscht Belt), a pizza joint, taco joint, dumpling shop and lots of other small booths and vendors. It’s not just a great place to grab a bite to eat and look around, but also a good place to buy groceries—the fish monger is top notch. My biggest issue with the Stockton Market is that it could have better hours, as it closes early (3-4pm) and is not open on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Only a short drive down river, this restaurant is a local favorite with awesome staff, food and ambience. Besides the food, my two favorite things about it are it’s pet friendly patio and that it’s BYOB. Enjoy a growler of beer from local brewers such as Odd Bird or Triumph on the patio with your friends, family and furry companions. El Tule is a Peruvian/Mexican restaurant with incredible options for vegetarians, seafood fanatics and meat eaters alike. The only down sides to this place is the lengthy line depending on when you go/how large your party is and it can be pricey! For better deals call ahead to see their weekly programming and specials. As someone who grew up in Princeton I can say that is my favorite restaurant in all of NJ. *not sponsored, but that would be cool*

John and Peter’s is the best place to see live music, particularly bands and singer song writers, in New Hope. With live music every single night, affordable drafts and an extensive beer list, they are a must for people looking for a fun night out in New Hope. Be warned however, as many music venues, it can get loud. If you’re trying to enjoy conversation without loud music you can always sit on their patio. Their kitchen is open until midnight making them one of the latest food joints in town, and their pickle spears are worth the trip alone! My favorite night at J&Ps is midweek for the “Wednesday Invitational” where local legends jam it out and you can hear A list musicians ripping gratuitous guitar solos.

With a great and ambience and the best haddock chowder you may find anywhere, this spot is a New Hope gem. While the cocktails and food are pricey, Salt House’s kitchen is open until 11:44pm, making it a perfect late night dinner spot and it’s bar is open until 2am. My advice is try to get a table upstairs, as that’s where the Salt House’s charm really shines, and if you like seafood, get the haddock chowder—I order it every time.

An awesome vegetarian and vegan friendly restaurants thats reasonably priced and one of my personal favorite spots in New Hope—and very conveniently they are BYOB and share a parking lot with Triumph brewery! Their asparagus appetizer is off the chain. They are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and open at 3:30pm the rest of the week. They do close on the earlier side so make sure to check their hours first before heading over!

This is perhaps the premiere hidden gem of the Lambertville/New Hope breakfast scene. The speckled egg is just a short drive down river from Lambertville and shares a parking lot with the Golden Nugget flea market. It’s hours are Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays until 2pm (same as the Golden Nugget) but the breakfast sandwiches and pastries make it well worth the drive out of town. The prices are reasonable too. Their Kimichi egg and cheese sandwich might be the very best breakfast sandwich I’ve had in my life. Their sandwich bread/rolls are baked from scratch and if you get the sausage egg and cheese, the sausage is house ground. Check out their Instagram @thespeckledeggcafe for weekly specials and food pics that will have you wishing you could do breakfast twice. 5/5 recommended.

This deli in the Stockton Market does not mess around when it comes to sandwiches! Much of the hype around The Borscht Belt comes from its celebrity chef Nick Liberato, although what excites me about this “jawn” are the incredible pescatarian sandwich options. With an impressive selection of spreads/shmears, cured meats and pastramied salmon this spot is a serious contender for best lunch in the area (as well as one of the closest to the farm). The prices are quiet steep, so be warned. Also, the portion sizes seem more generous for meat sandwiches than the pescatarian options. With neon signs saying “be a Mensch” and similar witticisms, this Jewish deli feels like the real deal. Well worth the visit if you can catch them on one of the days the Stockton Market is open!
