City/town information

General information and few recommendations.
Taos and the surrounding areas are full of friendly folks who love the outdoors and take care of their community. This area is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life! Get ready to relax, take your time, and go with the flow. We are in Mountain Standard Time here in New Mexico–however there is nothing standard when it comes to time! Things are a little more relaxed here in the mountains, so don’t be surprised if you have to wait for a table to eat or if the store you want to visit isn’t open exactly at the time as published! Also, you will notice that hours of operation vary from place-to-place and some stores do not explicitly state their hours. If you just shrug your shoulders and say “I’ll stop by again later”, you will probably find the store is open when you return and you won’t have noticed the wait! Hey, we are in the mountains so there is no rush! Here in Valdez, we are at 7680 ft elevation. Make sure to drink plenty of water (bring a water bottle with you while you are out), apply sunscreen often, and use chapstick liberally! The sun is closer and the air is a bit more thin due to the elevation. By making sure you are hydrated and using SPF, you will minimize the effects that altitude change (i.e. headaches, sunburn, thirst) can have on our body. There is always something to do during the day, and in the evenings relaxing by the fire is the perfect way to wind down, play games, listen to music, watch movies, and enjoy company or time to yourself. Make sure to start your day with unique smoothies, coffees, teas, and locally sourced delicious goodies at 'Wake in Take' in Arroyo Seco before you start your day. This is a very special place, and we hope you find time to explore, learn, relax, and experience the unique and quirky Taos area!

Taos is a perfect destination for the whole family, no matter the season. In warmer months, enjoy horseback riding and llama trekking through the forested mountains, white water rafting and fishing on the Rio Grande, and hiking, climbing, and mountain biking on any number of routes and trails appropriate for all members of the family. Or catch some air and take a ride on a chairlift, hot air balloon, or zip line. Winter is beautiful in Taos, and there is no better place to learn how to ski or snowboard. Taos has some of the best snowsports schools in the country, and family friendly resorts. The holidays are a magical time to visit, with the downtown sidewalks and Taos Plaza twinkling with lights!
