Shopping, restaurants and beach

Not far from the resort. Lots to do. Several great restaurants that are right next to the ocean like Leilani's, Hula's and Monkeypod. Shopping ranges from small gift shops all the way to Lululemon and Louis Vittan. If you are into the active lifestyle, right next to Whalers Village is the Lower portion of Kaanapali Beach where there is a huge stretch of very active beach goers. There are huts that provide surf/ snorkel/ scuba lessons and several Katamaran Dinner and Scuba Cruises. Viator dot com is one of the most popular sites to book these or you can check them out on the beach or while shopping or dining at one of the restaurants/shops.

Food scene

Near the airport but a little out of the way. The absolute best maui experience. Make reservations. Expensive but the experience is worth it. Try to get a table closer to the entrance, those by the back bar are not quite as nice but if you have a group may be your only option. Need to go at least once.

Near the house, a bit of a walk but a nice one (go through the park next to the food trucks). Mahi Mahi is great and the Hula pie for dessert cannot be beat. A little pricy but the atmosphere and location by the ocean make it worth it.

Located in the Shops at Wailea. I am a filet mignon connoisseur and this place has the best I have ever had! They know it, and they charge you for it, but if you want a nice steak dinner, this is the place. Dress nice but they realize their guests are tourists (so nice shorts are OK but no t-shirts or bare feet). All of their sides are also amazing.....

The main intersection in Paia (hana hwy and baldwin ave) has lots of unique little shops. A store that sells just Ukulele's, Alice in Hulaland is one of my favorite souviner shops (maybe not for kids though) that also has great beach gear, blown glass, swimwear and shoe shops all in about a 4 city block area. Lovely little town (also see restaurants for some of my favorite).

Yes it is a big box store and not something you would usually see on a Maui tourguide. But the prices are the absolute best on the island. Highly recommend to stock up here at the beginning of your vacation before heading out to the resort. They also have great prices on beachgear. Pricing can be almost half of the local grocery stores and beach gear shops. If you don't have a costco card, your best bet would be Wal-Mart or Target. Don't worry, you will spend plenty at the local shops for the more unique gifts and on all of my other recommended local restaruants and shops.

Sightseeing

Absolute best snorkeling. Look for the bay on the map and you can park in 3 or 4 spots and walk through a beautiful rainforest on your way to snorkel. The rocks are a bit tricky to maneuver so just be careful, if you drive past this area, there are several areas where you can pull off the road and take pictures just be careful these are dirt pull offs but GREAT views.

For you adventurers, amazing hike and sites. About a 2 hour hike along the Pipiwai Trail to the falls, nothing crazy, but a long drive to get there (very worth it in my opinion as it is one of the most beautiful sights on the island). In the middle of the hike you go through an amazing bamboo forest and see a large Banyan tree. At the end of the hike you see the amazing falls (Careful your shoes may get a little wet and slippery on the rocks). Also the drive is a bit crazy, lots of dirt roads, bad roads and one way bridges/corners. Drive is challenging but be careful and it is worth it. There is a small cost for parking but this is one of those things that will really give you the Maui experience. This drive is similar to the drive to Hana, and you can actually take the road to hana and just continue around. But I would treat it as a separate trip because either will take a full day and you really want to take your time and enjoy the hike and the falls.

Reservations are now required. Have not been here personally but plan on going next chance I get. Maui’s famous black sand beach, named Honokalani and located in Waianapanapa State Park about three miles north of the town of Hana, is more than just a beach. It was historically a very important place for Hawaiians, and there are various Hawaiian legends about this place – it is deemed as sacred by the Hawaiian people. The park itself comprises of 122 acres, encompassing the beach, lava caves, wind-twisted foliage, Hawaii’s largest known heiau (temple), stone arches, and blowholes. The park is very interesting to hike through, and there are even a few wet, spring-fed sea caves and lava tubes. For visitors, reservations will be taken up to two weeks in advance, and no same-day reservations will be accepted. Parking fees for out-of-state visitors will be $10; while walk-ins, bicyclists, or visitor drop-offs will be a $5 entry fee per person. Prices are higher for commercial vehicles. Reservations are made at: https://www.gowaianapanapa.com/

Heard a lot about this one but have not been yet, so this is from trip advisor - Take a hike up to Twin Falls on the island of Maui as you immerse yourself in Hawaiian nature along the way. Be sure to bring your swimming gear, so you can take a dip in the cool natural pools when you arrive. The area is owned and operated by the local Wailele Farm, who have done a great job of preserving surrounding areas and rainforests. You can also get a refreshing pineapple juice or homemade cake at the Twin Falls Farm Stand near the entrance. The farm also conducts tours for a behind-the-scenes look of the farm and falls. Parking can be a little complex and packed but plenty of room in the park. If you visit on your way to Hana, make sure you set aside some time as hanna is a long drive.

One of the best beaches anywhere! This is an amazing place to walk on the sandy beach for miles and miles with the waves crashing in. Lots of windsurfers. When you get the the parking area and go out to the water, if you go left, that leads to the long stretch of beach that eventually ends in baby beach where there are usually beached sea turtles (don't worry, they find their way back). It is called baby beach because it has a nice break that makes for easy swimming for newborns. Back to the main beach parking, if you go left when you get to the water, you will usually find lots of fun hippies that like to play music and volleyball gets very active on the weekends.

Interested in Cliff Diving or watching a cliff diving show? The appropriately-named black rock is a chunk of lava that juts out from a beautiful section of white-sand beach. It’s located at the tip of Ka’anapali Beach, a three-mile long stretch found on Maui. The lava isn’t particularly difficult to climb, but it can be a little rough on the feet. Overall, the jump is relatively easy, and natural platforms let you choose a height from which to launch. The water is usually quite calm and a beautiful shade of blue. The views from below the ocean’s surface are fantastic, with reef fish, turtles, and other sea life wandering by, unafraid of the cliff divers. After your dive, stay around for a professional cliff diving and torch lighting ceremony held each night. A torch lighting and cliff diving ceremony is enacted each evening right before sunset. The public can watch from the white sandy beach as a man in ancient Hawaiian clothing light torches as he runs to the rock's summit. Once at the top, he dives off the cliff into the calm waters surrounding the landmark.

Clothing

Shorts are best to bring and can be worn year round. On the islands, even many business meeting attendees simply wear an aloha shirt and nice shorts. There are frequent light rains so a waterproof light jacket is could also come in handy.
