Grocery madness
The grocery stores can be pretty packed on the weekends and pretty bare after that although they do staff the check out lines pretty well on the busy days.
Try driving in with a load of food and beverages to get you through the first couple days. That way you can food shop when the crowds have thinned a bit.

What to bring
Don't over pack. Nothing formal on Hatteras Island.
The Food Lion grocery store and several restaurants are less than a mile walk from the house via a nice sidewalk.
