The Winery Founded in 2001. Designed with gravity in mind. Averill Creek's 150-ton capacity winery is built into the side of Mt. Prevost. With the help of designer Vasco Pavlov, we embraced the opportunity to create a new kind of winery. Guided by ingenuity and gravity, our state-of-the-art facility incorporates three buildings structured together, allowing wine to flow down from one stage to the next without the need for pumps. This gravity flow method allows for gentle handling of delicate varietals - helping to retain their subtle characteristics. In 2018, Winemaker Brent Rowland joined us, originally from the area but having worked 18 international harvests at esteemed producers in California, New Zealand, Australia, and Niagara. Brent was acquiring the problem-solving skills needed to push the boundaries of New World regions, and ultimately came full circle to his home on Vancouver Island. Now with Andy’s nearly 20 years of insight into our vineyard, and a winemaker with a wealth of knowledge, our aim is to showcase what we do best here on Vancouver Island: vibrancy, texture, freshness and elegance. We do so with little intervention in the vineyard and the winery in order to create honest wines, and a clear segue from the vineyard to the glass. Our collection of hand-crafted fine wines have helped raise the profile of Vancouver Island terroir and winemaking in Canada and internationally.

Blue Grouse Estate is comprised of 65 acres tucked away on a sunny Vancouver Island slope in the Cowichan Valley, named from a Salishan First Nations word meaning "the warm land". The warm, dry summers and mild, moist winters make the Cowichan Valley Canada's only “cool” maritime Mediterranean climate. The Valley records sufficient growing ‘degree days’ during the Spring and Summer which provides good conditions for many vitis vinifera grape varietals that bud late and ripen early. The influence of global warming appears to be influencing the ripening prospects for grape growing, but varietal and site selection, combined with our vineyard management practices, remain critical to our success.

Alderlea Vineyards is one of Vancouver Island’s oldest and most respected vineyards, nestled in the Cowichan Valley, near Duncan on Vancouver Island. The estate-grown grapes produce a mix of dry white wines including Bacchus, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc. Red wines comprise Pinot Noir, Clarinet made from old vine Marechal Foch, Merlot, and a Cabernet Foch blend known as Matrix. Zac and Julie took over Alderlea Vineyards in April 2017 from Roger and Nancy Dosman whose strong vision for an island vineyard and skilled winemaking made Alderlea one of the pioneers in Vancouver Island winegrowing. Zac and Julie have left behind 20-year careers in Health & Safety and Human Resources respectively, with global corporations to pursue a long-held dream of owning a vineyard and making wine professionally. Not long after getting married, Zac and Julie began entertaining the idea of retreating from an otherwise successful corporate life and owning their own vineyard one day. Over the years, they looked at a number of vineyards on Vancouver Island and in the Okanagan, in addition to properties in France, Italy, the US, New Zealand and South America. In the end, the pull of Vancouver Island was very strong, with Zac having grown up in Port Hardy and having family on the island still. When Zac and Julie first visited Alderlea in the fall of 2016, they knew they had found their dream vineyard. The considerable pride, care and attention with which Roger and Nancy founded and managed the vineyard, winery and Alderlea brand were palpable. Zac and Julie are excited to be part of the history of Alderlea Vineyards and to continue to create unique, high-quality wines that epitomise the character and beauty of the Cowichan Valley.

On the south east side of Vancouver Island is a pastoral setting of rolling green fertile hills and majestic softwood rainforests: the Cowichan Valley. Mediterranean growing seasons and mild maritime winters make it the most important agricultural area on Vancouver Island. This is British Columbia’s newest wine-growing region. The vineyard at Cherry Point was established in 1990 when the founders purchased 34 acres on a former mink ranch a few miles south of Cowichan Bay. Grape growing was new on Vancouver Island. The vineyard was planted with grape varieties suited to the island’s soil and climate and soon Cherry Point Estate Wines became one of the first licensed wineries on Vancouver Island. The vineyard is planted on a glacial moraine, a gravel and stony hill, rich in minerals on top of the surrounding clay soils. South facing slopes provide ideal drainage and solar exposure. A large pond catches the winter rain as it runs down the vineyard’s sloping hills and the mineral enriched water is judiciously irrigated back onto the vines. Today the vineyard is one of the largest on Vancouver Island. White varieties include Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Ortega, Siegerrebe, and Epicure. Red varieties are Pinot Noir, Zweigelt, Cabernet Libre, Agria, and Castel. Solar exposure and ocean air circulation are fundamental elements in determining Cherry Point’s terroir. The farm is managed to reflect the character of the land, with the resulting flavors and aromas that give Cherry Point’s wines their uniqueness. The award-winning wines are made following traditional European wine making processes, where the earth makes the wine, honoring the spiritual connection between the earth, rain and sun that nourish the vineyard. The whites are crisp and clean, brimming with varietal fruit; reds, fruit forward and full bodied. Both whites and reds have character and weight, reflecting the elegance of the Estate.

Much of the 40-acre property at Busnardo Vineyard is planted to vinifera varietals that have been traditional to Divino Estate Winery for more than 40 years. The Cobble Hill vineyard site was established in 1996, but was built from years of experience in the Okanagan Valley. Divino was first established in the early 1980's in Oliver, B.C., built on a vineyard on the Golden Mile that had been planted with vinifera vines since the late 1960's. Divino has always maintained the philosophy of being a true 100% estate winery. We use only the grapes that grow on our vineyard for our winery operation. Chardonnay, Trebbiano, Castel, Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio form the core of the mix of varietals on the Busnardo Vineyard. Other niche varieties fill the wide range of plantings and offer wonderful blending accents or at times may be bottled as single varietal wines when the conditions result in exceptional harvests. The long growing season of the Cowichan Valley region allows for great opportunities for grapes to mature to completion with soft and full overtones. Late harvest wines, sparkling wines and other unique offerings have been produced over the past years. Each year awaits the completion of harvest before the decisions are made as to how to extract the most unique attributes of that years harvest. The grapes make the first decision on what type of wine will be made.

We are often asked; “Why are you so passionate about wine?” The response is likely not what you would expect. Yes, wine is this incredible art form with an endless number of variables that could only be grasped through living countless lifetimes, but what is the point of an incredible art form if it is isn’t shared. The reason that we are so passionate about wine is a love for people and sharing a glass together with the ones you love. It all starts with the farm, we truly believe that wine is not made, wine is grown. Being blessed with this beautiful piece of land in the Cowichan Valley, it has become our responsibility to steward it to the best of our ability. For that, we look to the old world. They all farmed organically, not for marketing or because it was trendy, but simply because that was how they farmed. Not against nature, but with it. It is our goal through bio-diverse and sustainable farming practices like dry farming, composting, mulching and animal husbandry to breathe abundant life into our land. The beautiful byproduct of farming this way will be a healthy balanced vineyard...

We maintain 5 acres of sustainably dry farmed vineyards in the Cowichan Valley, No chemical herbicides, systemic fungicides or pesticides are used, only natural fertilizers with organic ingredients and our composted pomace for the vineyard. Additional grapes are purchased as needed from vineyards that use similarly responsible farming methods. Our farming practices include extensive canopy management to create airflow through our vineyard, which greatly reduces mildew and botrytis pressure, mechanical weed control under the vine rows to create a mulch which suppresses the weeds and creates organic matter and moisture as it breaks down. The use of beneficial insects and sticky tape for insect control, We are proud to have been farming our property in this manner for over 20 years. Since the 2010 vintage our winemaking has emphasized a minimalist & natural approach, no enzymes used at crush, indigenous yeast fermentation, no animal based fining products. (vegan friendly) and minimal use of sulphites. These protocols produce wines with vibrant character that are expressive of their terroir.

We have been growing vines since 1984, first in the Okanagan Valley and now in North Cowichan. We brought our experience and passion for grapes to the Cowichan Valley in 1999, when our family purchased an old 32 acre dairy farm. With much hard work and dedication, we were able to establish our 18 acre vineyard. We have 8 varieties of grapes; the main varities ranging from Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Marechal Foch and Gamay Noir. We started off selling our grapes to local wineries, but in 2008 we released our first vintage of wines. So come by and enjoy the taste of our wines and get to know a little more about us and our journey in this ever-growing wine industry.

Labelled “Canada’s Provence” by the late, distinguished foodie, James Barber, our special corner of the world is a fertile trifecta of warm growing conditions, rich soil, and abundant rolling hills. Factor in the passionate vision of the Turyk family, Cowichan’s celebrated food and wine culture, and good old-fashioned hard work, and Unsworth Vineyards has quite a story to tell. Tim and Colleen Turyk have a long history in the Cowichan Valley area, spending summers at Shawnigan Lake—a much-loved lakeside community that has been attracting families for generations. Tim’s mother Marjorie summered at the lake as a child and made it a part of her own family tradition, bringing Tim and his sisters. Having grown up watching Cowichan Valley’s homespun wine and food culture evolve, Tim’s ears perked up when he heard about a small vineyard and winery that was for sale in the fall of 2009. After 40+ years working in BC’s fishing industry, he was looking for a new challenge. One look at the spectacular property and early 1900s farmhouse, and Tim knew he’d found something special. Colleen saw the vision too and they bought the farm, so to speak. It was the heritage around Marjorie that inspired the name—Unsworth was her maiden name. The Turyks got to work and from expanding the operation, restoring the farmhouse and creating a restaurant, to building a brand around sustainably managed vineyard practices, they built Unsworth one vine, one bottle, one blend at a time.

A Cobble Hill original, the Cobblestone Pub has been a fixture in the village since 1983, and community hub long before. Sitting on the location of the Cobble Hill division of The Cowichan Creamery, which was a hub around which many aspects of community life revolved from 1895 to the early 1940s. From humble beginnings, The Cobblestone Pub has been a staple and as the community continues to grow so do we. Through a number of renovations, expansions, and additions, we have always kept the community front and centre as the focus of our purpose. Locally owned, family operated, we’re here for all the big moments in our guests lives, from births to graduations, birthdays to anniversaries, weddings and wakes, we’ve been with our guests through it all. As we on four decades of serving up good-times and cheer, we will always maintain our commitment to high quality, great value, and warm hospitality that keeps the Cobblestone your neighbourhood gathering spot.

Though trained as engineers, father-son duo Stephen and Jeremy Schacht have used their knowledge of science and traditional distilling techniques to create a hand crafted distillery where they can make hand crafted spirits. Like the Ampersand, we are all about bringing things together; ingredients & techniques; science & art; tradition & innovation. We make delicious spirits designed to be a staple on your bar. Ampersand Distilling Co. was born out of Jeremy & Jessi's love of craft cocktails, and Jeremy & Stephen's engineering backgrounds. Bringing together his degree in chemical engineering and his parent's love of farming, the distillery was an innovative way to combine their passions. Despite being busy with other businesses, Stephen & Ramona moved to the Cowichan Valley in 2007 to start a vegetable farm. Their son Jeremy, fascinated with the technical aspects of distillation, set out to find an innovative way to put his degree in chemical process engineering to use. The distillery is a result of that innovation, leading to a new family business.

At the southern edge of the Cowichan Valley and bordering the communities of Cobble Hill and Mill Bay is the village of Shawnigan Lake. A popular place to live and vacation, the area is renowned for its rugged beauty and its namesake, 7 kilometre long lake that provides the opportunity for fishing, swimming and sunbathing in the summer. The village itself consists of gift shops, galleries, and a number of places to eat, including options for gourmet pizza, seafood, sushi and more. At the Shawnigan Lake Museum you’ll learn about the famous landscape artist, E.J. Hughes, who lived in these parts and defined the region with oil paintings that now regularly sell for six figures in international art markets. Shawnigan is also known for two independent boarding schools and OUR Ecovillage, a sustainable learning community and demonstration site that hosts a Zero Mile eatery. Nearby is the recently restored Kinsol Trestle named for the short-lived “King Solomon Mine”. Restored in 2011, it is an engineering feat, even by today’s standards and remains one of the loftiest wooden railway trestles in the world. If you’re travelling along the Trans Canada Highway, getting to Shawnigan Lake is easy: Heading north from Victoria: turn left on Shawnigan Lake Road, approximately 2 kilometres past the Malahat Chalet. Heading south from Duncan: turn right on Shawnigan Lake-Mill Bay Road, just before you reach Mill Bay. Shawnigan Lake: 48.653709º-123.623156º

Breweries

Some of the best things happen over a beer. Ideas are ignited, friendships are forged and every now and then breweries are born. This holds true for Red Arrow Brewing Co. which is the culmination of friendships and unbridled, hop fuelled desire. We’re a collective. A synergy. Not one thing to one person or all things to every person. We’re a team of co-workers enjoying the creative process together. We create beer with a personality that has meaning to where we are. “I want to start my own production brewery.” Chris Gress was a man obsessed with the incredible beers being produced in his home town of Victoria. He was an enthusiastic student of cutting-edge equipment and technology surrounding the beer making industry. He was having a blast as the brewer at Duncan’s Craig Street Brewpub. Co-owner of Craig Street, Lance Steward, knew it was just a matter of time before that pub was going to lose its brewer. Excited by the prospect of developing Duncan’s first production brewery, Lance and Chris formed an alliance, and decided that they would jump off the cliff together. First step. Location. The beautiful Arrow Custom Cycle building had it all. Next, was the fundraising and business planning. Soon the brewery equipment, the name, the branding and the ownership team and the management team. We are so fortunate to be backed by great community minded, successful people. We are also very fortunate to have launched in June of 2015 with the helpful sweat equity of family and friends. We have never looked back and continue to grow our brand and our customer base with the same passion for craft beer as always.

We are located in the seaside town of Chemainus, BC, famous for it’s murals and inexplicably badass skate park. Stop in for a tour, a sample, a flight, or even a whole glass of beer, because the local government trusts you to handle more than a tiny sip, unlike some other cities where they don’t allow lounges. Stay for the afternoon, enjoy our gigantic patio, bring the kids, bring the dog. Spark up the fire pit for a weenie roast or destroying old photos of your ex. Hungry? Bring a picnic or order in from many fine establishments like The Sawmill TapHouse, Pho Triple 7, or Little Town Pizza. We’ve got menus, you just need to decide what’s going to fill that hole in your soul. Want to take some Riot beer to a party, funeral, intervention, or home to drink in the tub? You can. We fill growlers. Bring one from home or get one while you’re here. We also have 650 mL bombers and 6-packs of cans right by the door - super quick for when you’re late for work. We’re brewing new beers all the time, so you better stop by as often as you can. Wouldn’t want to miss anything, right? We also host a lot of events in our lounge, from Open Mic, to Kitchen Party, Live Music Shows and Comedy Shows, there is always something happening at Riot! Make sure to visit our Facebook Event Page or CowichanCulture.ca for the full list of events.

Schools

Shawnigan Lake School's mission and values are inseparable from the fact that we are first and foremost a co-educational boarding school; a welcoming community whose aim it is to prepare our young men and women equally for independent and inspiring futures through the means of a well-balanced, holistic education. Five hundred students, representing over thirty nations, come together each year to live and study in this unparalleled setting on the edge of Shawnigan Lake, Vancouver Island. We encourage all students to develop an understanding of and commitment to the people, the place and the heritage of Canada, British Columbia and Shawnigan. At the same time, we challenge ourselves each year to be relevant, purposeful and of service in a changing and increasingly global world. The conversations, connections, sense of community, and friendships forged through these shared experiences are, I believe, part of the magic of our School.
