Food scene

I spent a year and a half in France, and I got SPOILED when it comes to anything pastry or bread. Newtown Baking & Kitchen has absolutely delicious pastries, bread, and coffee for breakfast, in addition to amazing pizzas and dinner items. They also have great live music. To get there, you just stay on Parkersburg Tnp (right out of the driveway), and drive for roughly 5.5 miles. It will be on your right, across from Thornrose Cemetery.

I'm a sucker for bakeries, and little old Staunton has two! Both are amazing. If you're just passing through town and want a treat in the morning on your way out, Reunion Bakery has great coffee, fast service, and INCREDIBLE pastries.

Hiking/outdoors

George Washington National Forest is only about 8-9 miles away, if you take a left out of the driveway. The drive gives you a little taste of the beautiful and timeless mountain views, and rolling, nostalgic farmland that the Shenandoah Valley has to offer. There are plenty of hikes and nature walk pull-offs if you stick on Parkersburg Tpk. A popular one, Elliot Knob, will be on your right just beyond the shooting range entrance (on your left). It's a nice long hike with creek crossing, waterfalls, and the highest peak in the county. Watch out for bears and rattlers!

Sightseeing

If you get off I-81, and meander a little West toward the Alleghenies, you'll find some of the most beautiful, peaceful, rolling fields and mountain views you could imagine. You'll find old German architecture, farmsteads, horse and buggies, and Amish markets scattered throughout the valley. Check out the Amish market in Harrisonburg, Shenandoah Heritage Market, for some local products, or cut over to route 42 for some slower scenic driving. Look up visitshenandoah.org for a detailed visitor's guide. And be sure to wander through historic downtown Staunton for gorgeous old architecture and some delicious food.

The Frontier Cultural Museum is especially great for families. Younger kids will love seeing the farm animals up close, and older kids will get to interact with period actors/interpreters in the living history exhibits. Kids 7-12 get in for $7, and 6 and under visit for free.

Relaxing

What can I say? It's right down the road from the house, super chill, neighborhood vide, live music, and amazing beer. If you're just passing through and want to kick back for a bit before turning in for the night or traveling on down 81, this is a great spot to grab a beer (and there's usually a food truck on weekends for a quick bite).
